Kathryn was born on June 2, 1916 in Mitchell, NE, to Arthur and Elizabeth Groff. Her early years were spent on a "truck farm" south of Murdo, SD near the White River. She was united in marriage to Louis Volmer on November 19, 1935. Between 1935 and 1949, they were involved with bowling alley, retail grocery and farming ventures. In 1949, they built a service station and café in Draper, SD. In 1976, they retired in Pierre, SD. Shortly after the passing of Louis in 1995, Kathryn relocated to Marion, IN to live with her son, Lowell and his wife, Joyce. Although she always had such fond memories of her roots, and many friends in Draper and surrounding area, Kathryn enjoyed her last fifteen years in Marion, where she could be close to so many family members, as well as her good friend, Josephine Gerald, Joyce's mother.

Kathryn was very active in the Marion Senior Center where she was considered a great euchre player. She also continued to be an avid sports fan, which had always been a family tradition.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis, in 1995; grandson, Brian Volmer in 1989; five brothers, two sisters and two stepsisters.
