Burns, yardmaster of the Great Northern, who died Saturday night of pneumonia. The funeral was held at his home on South Dakota street yesterday morning, the body being taken to St. Patrick's church, where a high mass of requiem was celebrated by Rev. Father De Siere, assisted by Rev. Father Follett. The procession which followed the body to the grave was a long one and the floral offerings were so numerous that a special flower carriage was in the procession. The pallbearers were all old-time friends, and included Michael Angello, Armmett Womack, William Hoolihan, Martin McManus, Edward Keene and Charles McCormick.

DeathMarch 2021Bernice Irene Stoddard died in March 2021 at age 97 Irene was born on the family’s Little Willow farm, April 6, 1923. She was the second daughter of Loren and Beryl (Gray) Stoddard. Irene attended Ithaca High School, graduating in the class of 1940 and then attended Richland County Normal, graduating in 1942. She married Benjamin (Ben) F. Straight, September 30, 1944 in Fresno, California.

Irene was a long-time member of the First Baptist Church and served as the financial secretary for many years. She was a founder of the Horse Creek Hustlers 4-H Club and a project leader for a number of years. After Ben’s untimely death in 1978, Irene worked for 12 years, from 1978-1990 at Ulrich’s Coast to Coast. She enjoyed traveling to visit her sisters, children and grandchildren in addition to sewing, quilting, and refinishing antique furniture. In retirement she volunteered at the Brewer Library and the Thrift Store. She spent many years researching the genealogy of the Stoddard and Straight families and assembled beautiful notebooks for each of her children. Irene Straight was an avid reader and also greatly enjoyed the outdoors and working in the yard surrounding the Straight farm where she lived from 1953 until moving to Pine Valley Community Village in 2006 until her death at 97.

She is survived by three children: Ronald (Isabela) Straight, Richland Center; Susan (Jim) Rawson, Arlington, Texas; John (Helen) Straight, Crystal, Minnesota; former daughter-in-law Charlotte Straight, Worcester, Massachusetts. Grandchildren: Ben Straight, Nate Straight, Jon Straight, Elizabeth Rawson Hamff, Timothy Rawson, David Straight, Molly Straight, Peter Straight. Six great grandchildren: Audrey, Avery, and Marek Hamff, Camille and Brandt Straight, and Kaiden Davis-Straight. She is also survived by one sister-in-law, Mary Forsberg, 7 nieces, and 10 nephews. Special friends include Jean Clarke, Chuck Grimesey, Ryan Elliot and Oak Hills Pine Valley Staff and Therapists.

Irene was preceded in death by her husband, Ben in 1978 and her three sisters: Bonnie Stoddard, 1987, Winifred Devine, 1999, and Joan Haak, 2004.

A private family interment will be held and a memorial service is being planned for the summer.
