Getschman was college's first doctoral graduate

by Mark McGowan
Keith Getschman was the superintendent of schools in Stillman Valley when he earned a place in the NIU history books.
In the spring of 1965, Getschman became the first person to earn a doctoral degree from the NIU College of Education. That fall, Ed.D. in educational administration in hand, he fulfilled a longtime ambition to become a professor by joining the faculty in his alma mater.
Only five years later, he was named chairman of the department of educational administration and services.
Retired since 1984, by which time the department had become Leadership and Educational Policy Studies, Getschman died Feb. 14 in DeKalb. He was 79.
“He treasured his time at NIU. He was proud of his contributions to the Leadership and Educational Policy Studies area,” said his wife, Mary Lou Getschman. “He was just very devoted to the university, and very proud of being a Huskies fan. We had season tickets to football and men’s and women’s basketball for years and years.”
“Keith was a wonderful department chair,” said Wilma Miranda, chair of the Department of Leadership, Educational Psychology and Foundations.
Miranda joined NIU when Getschman chaired the then-Department of Leadership and Educational Policy Studies.
“One of the things that made him so effective was that he had a strong commitment to the university, to higher education and to the academy. He was also a bridging person between the public school sector we serve and the academy,” she added. “He was very fair and a very honorable person with a high sense of integrity that no one questioned, even when they disagreed with him. We were young and naïve, and spouted our own opinions, but he never reacted to that in a negative way. You got the feeling there was space for that.”
“He was very fair and believed in participatory governance,” agreed Bob Rosemier, who retired 14 years ago from teaching graduate courses in statistics. “He was always upfront, and you knew where he stood.”
Jim Lockard, director of the College of Education’s Learning Center, is another Getschman hire.
“He was a kindly, fatherly figure, and always pleasant to visit with,” Lockard said. “He took a personal interest in his staff, and people were quite loyal to him.”
Born May 2, 1927, in Milwaukee, Getschman began his teaching career in Stillman Valley and kicked off the high school’s football program.
During his time at NIU, he was active in the Illinois Association of School Business Officials and held leadership positions.
He also served in 1973 as chairman of the Admissions Policies and Academic Standards Committee, which recommended to the University Council to place a greater emphasis on high school class rank and less on test scores. That change took effect with the freshman class of 1974.
In the late 1970s, he and two NIU colleagues consulted for the Rockford School District on a three- to five-year plan for facility utilization.
Getschman, James Heald and Nicholas DeLuca drafted a controversial plan that recommended the closure of 11 school buildings. School board members followed that advice in 1981.
Despite Getschman’s record of active and strong leadership, Miranda said her boss was a quiet and thoughtful man.
“Even if things weren’t going his way, he was always unfailingly courteous,” she said. “He had a wonderful sense of humor and this slow smile.”
The College of Education now honors outstanding alumni from its educational leadership program with an annual award named for Getschman. Faculty in educational administration from the Department of Leadership, Educational Psychology and Foundations inaugurated the award.
“He was just floored by that. He was so honored. It just gave him a warm feeling,” Mary Lou Getschman said. “He was just a great guy – so many people remember his smile – and he enjoyed working with people. His faculty were like his family in many respects, and he was proud of what they could do and what they did do to enhance the whole program.”.

George, born in Hohnstorf, Amt Medingen, Hanover, Germany, left his homeland when he was only eighteen years old. He arrived, by ship, in America with his older brother Henry and Henry's family in 1868. After 3 years of clearing timber in Wisconsin, George moved to Illinois for a short time, then on west to Kansas, which was open territory at that time. George Schlickau was called "Gene" and spelled his name "Jorgen Schlieckau". According to his son Albert, George paid $20 at a government office in Hutchinson to legally change the spelling of his last name by omitting the letter 'e'. A friend by the name of John Harme came with George so they could homestead on adjacent properties. They arrived in Haven Township on foot, having walked from the government land offices in Wichita. George staked his claim on the allotted 80 acres. While surveying their newly staked land, George thoughtfully remarked to his friend, "Why would a man want more than 80 acres"? Later he saw the value of owning this prairie land and purchased an adjoining 80 for a shotgun and a horse. Although subsequent purchases were made, this was the only land transaction George made that involved the barter/trade method. Since it was a requirement to live on the staked claims and 'prove' the claim, the men decided to work as a team in order to work the ground and earn enough to live. John Harms stayed on the homesteads while George worked for 25 cents a week as a hired hand for a lumberman. Of necessity George had to walk to work, approximately 32 miles one way. He returned to the homestead every month or 6 weeks bringing money and provisions, which consisted mainly of corn meal, flour and beans. With part of the earned money, the men bought 2 oxen, which they used to break additional prairie sod. After working in Wichita approximately 4 months, George acquired enough money to purchase a horse and several months later bought a cow and a calf. These were the first cattle on George's claim and from this cow and calf, a herd was started. As this herd increased, George had a market among the settlers who lay their claims and build their homes. With the coming of more settlers, women were arriving in the area. Two months after her arrival in Haven Township, George married Clara Rathke. George and Clara's first home was a small one room house, which later became their smokehouse. About 1881 they built a wood framed, 2 story house which is still standing. George lived in the Haven community the remainder of his life, suffering a paralytic stroke in October, 1905. He passed away in his home November 28, 1913 at the age of 63.
2 June 1868George Hans Schlieckau immigrated with Henry Schlieckau and Maria Harms on 2 June 1868; George arrived, by ship, in America with his older brother Henry and Henry's family in 1868.

Clara and George were instrumental in organizing the St. Paul's Lutheran Church near Haven. A resident minister was an unknown luxury in the early years, so a visiting minister would come through about ever 3 weeks. Since the Schlickau home was close to the church, the minister often stayed with them in their one room house, which posed a problem about sleeping arrangements. A make-shift bed was made for the minister from chairs. Spelling, quilting and singing bees were held among neighbors and friends for recreation. Since Clara loved music and singing, they would attend the singing bees, walking both directions because the horses had worked hard all day and had to be rested for the following day's labors. Children would be bundled up and taken along to the various bees and literary meetings.

Albert was baptized at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Haven Township, Kansas on 09/19/1880, the first recorded baptism on the church records. On April 26, 1905, Albert married Florence Elsebabeth Wittorff. They made their home southeast of Haven and raised 4 children there. Albert was an astute businessman and an innovative farmer. Although Albert was always a livestock producer, it wasn't until 1910 that he purchased his first registered Hereford bull. This purebred bull was used on mixed cows for a few years. Since Albert and his brother, Walter, were pleased with the calves the bull sired, in 1913 they each purchased 800 purebred cows to begin their respective registered Hereford operations. The Schlickau's exhibited cattle at the Kansas State Fair for the first time in 1919 when Harry (Albert's son) showed his 4-H heifer. Nearly every year since then, the family has shown Hereford cattle in major shows across the nation. An annual production sale has been held since 1943, with cattle sold to ranches across America and to foreign countries. The sale is held at the Haven Ranch on the first Saturday in December. Through the years, Albert and Florence acquired additional land around Haven and in McPherson County. In the mid-thirties, following the depression when land prices were low, grass and farmland was purchased in the Harper County area primarily for grazing purposes.
