"Vince" Phelan, age 82, passed away at home on Friday, Aug. 27, 2004, on the seven year anniversary of his beloved wife Betty's passing. He was born on Nov. 13, 1921, in Spring Green, to Vincent and Rosella (Ring) Phelan. Vince was a graduate of Madison East High School. After graduation he proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II, receiving two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star. Upon his return from service, he married the love of his life, Betty (Swanson) Phelan. They shared 48 happy years together. They worked together at Oscar Mayer for more than 30 years. Vince was active as a union steward and proud to work to better the working conditions of his brothers and sisters of Local Union No. 538 UFCW. They retired to Clearwater, Fla., where they lived until returning to Madison in 1997. Vince was politically active in the Democrat party. Vince was a loving, caring and compassionate man with a great sense of humor, remarkable memory, and zest for life. He made a lasting impression on all those fortunate enough to have known and loved him. Vince was born with the gift of conversation. He could talk with anyone about any subject. He loved people. He taught us many important lessons, the greatest being to love one another. He was blessed to be surrounded his entire life by good friends and loving family who cared for him until his passing. He appreciated all the care and comfort his family so generously gave him.
