6 May 1922On 6 May 1922 From Justus Holmes Pershing (06 May 1922):
Frederick Pershing, my great grandfather, came from France to Pennsylvania in 1749 and died near Latrohe in 1798. He arrived at Philadelphia on the sail ship Jacob, under Captain Adolph DeGrove…
Records show he located near Greensburg before Hannestown became the 1st county seat west of the Alleghenies. He was a member of the "Frontier Rangers" from 1773 to 1778. John Pershing, a brother, was one of the signers of the Hannestown, Declaration of Independence on May 16th 1775, 14 months before the 4th of July 1776 Philadelphia Declaration. John Pershing was one of the 94 patriots who took the Oath of Fidelity and Allegiance and belonged to the 1st Militia in Col. John Proctors Westmoreland Provincials, whose standard was the Rattlesnake flag…
Mathew Wilkinson, a Revolution soldier, whom I knew, died in 1856, was a relative of mine whose wife was a Miss Bayard. Five of my forbears were contemporary with Gen Iathon McClain, Col John Proctor, Col John Pomroy, The Craigs, Barrs, Guthries, Sloans, etc of Rev days.
I was a contemporary with my Grandmother Christina P. 17 years, who saw the burning ashes of Hannestown by the Indians.
Rev Conrad Pershing was a member of Captain Craig's "Indian Scouts" and thereafter of Capt. Sloan's "Minute Men", see "Pershing Biography" by my father written in 1860.
Isaac Pershing, my father was the 1st Captain of the 1st uniformed and equipped military company under the regime of the 1st Militia law of 1810.
General J. J. Pershing, the present commander in chief of all the U S Armies, whose father and I were both born and raised on the same farm, belongs to the pioneers of Revolution days above referred to. The following is from the Greensburg Daily Tribune of Oct 20th 1915:
Dr J. H. Pershing furnished documentary evidence to the Civil and Industrial committee with the names of five of his forebears by the name of Pershing who lived here in pioneer days before the location of Hannestown and the erection of the first courthouse west of the Alleghany mountains, was awarded a gold medal, having priority in data over all other contestants in Westmoreland County."
Cousin of General J. J. Pershing.
