Gerding a lifelong resident of Corvallis, died Sunday afternoon at Good Samaritan Hospital following an extended illness. Mr. Gerding 68, of 960 N.E. Thousand Oaks Drive, was born in Corvallis to Henry and Mathilda (Leder) Gerding on June 13, 1916. He attended Roosevelt Grade School and graduated from Corvallis High School in 1935. Mr. Gerding entered business with his father at Gerding's grocery on Southwest Western Boulevard. On October 12, 1941 Mr. Gerding married Mary Fromherz in Lebanon. He served in the U.S. Navy from March 1943 until December 1945. Mr. Gerding returned to Corvallis to work with his brothers at Gerding grocery until 1964 when he became the owner and operator of Clausen Feed Store. He retired in 1969. Mr. Gerding was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and a fourth-degree member of the Knights of Columbus. Survivors include his wife, sons Dick of Fort Ord, California and Ken of Portland daughters Janet King of Newberg, Karen Sundet of Lake Jackson, Texas, and Kathy Martin of Albany, brothers Francis and Henry Jr. both of 364 Evergreen Road Philomath, and 10 grandchildren. Christian wake services will be held 7:30 p.m. today in the chapel of the McHenry Funeral Home 206 N.W. 5th St. with Mass to be said 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church 501 N.W. 25th St. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. Contributions in his memory may be made to the Linn-Benton Diabetic Association or to the St. Mary's Church organ fund in care of McHenry Funeral Home.
