Life EventDateDescription
Birth20 January 1825Johann Heinrich Luetkens was born on 20 January 1825 at Hanover, Germany.
Marriagebefore 1859He married Katherine Marie Ellenberg before 1859.
Marriageafter 1862Johann Heinrich Luetkens married Dorathea Catherine Wiese after 1862.
Death28 May 1891Johann Heinrich Luetkens died on 28 May 1891 at train accident, Reedsburg, Sauk, Wisconsin, at age 66 On Thursday of last week at 3:30 PM, a terrible accident occured at the crossing over the Northwestern Railway track on the west side of the river, in this city (Reedsburg). In attempting to cross the track at that point with a team, on his way to his farm in the town of Westfield, Henry Luetkens, a German farmer, aged 65 years, was struck by a St. Paul passenger train and almost instantly killed, and his wife Dora, age 53 years, was seriously injured, as was also Fred Luetkens, a young man of 15 years, all being occupants of the wagon at the time. The engine evidently struck the wagon just back of the horses as the wagon was completely wrecked and strewn along the north side of the track while the horses were thrown over the fence on the south side. One of the horses was found dead and the other so seriously injured, that being informed by Veterinary Surgeon Colline that it was a desperate case, roadmaster J.W. Wright humanely ordered the animal killed.

The victims of the accident were at once removed to the City Hotel where efficient surgeons were procured. Mr. Luetkens died within an hour from the time of his removal. Mrs. Luetkens and son remained at the hotel until Sunday afternoon, when the doctors thought they might with safety return to their home. Mr. Luetkens's funeral took place Saturday afternoon.

Upon examination of Henry Luetkens the surgeons found a compound comminuted and complicated fracture of the right thigh, producing an external wound 8 inches long extending down to the bone. Another open wound near the hip bone, on same side. Also received a compound fracture on his left upper arm, dislocated his right shoulder joint, fractured five or six ribs on the left side, also some ribs on the right side, and scalp badly wounded by five different cuts, face badly bruised, also left shoulder and right hip.

Mrs. Dora Luetkens, his wife, was also found to have received numerous wounds, one of which was incise lacerated wound above the right knee joint 3 or 4 inches long, and bruises of more or less extent on the left limb. Their son Fred's injuries were less and not dangerous. The patients are receiving the attention of Drs. Kordenat and Rood, the former as family physician and the latter as the physician of the railroad company.

Immediately after the death of Mr. Luetkens a jury was summoned by order of Justice C.F. Shelden to inquire into and by what means he came to his death. Marshal Kelley made return of the following to serve as jurors; J. C. Sedgwick, H. H. Webb, H. Schewe, Aug. Siefert, Wm Riggert and L. M. Kelley.
