16 November 1918On 16 November 1918 Nov. 16, 1918 Dear Iva,

Rec'd your letter and little did you expect you was sending it in a home with all the sorrow and changes we are having here. Leith's husband had the influenza but kept on working until he took cold in rain and died in a weeks time with pneumonia - Oct 20th 1918. Of course we must take her home, and at the time of his death she was sick in bed and I over them all the time. I escaped getting it until after he was buried about 3 days. Now Edgar - her oldest - is quite sick and I am to. But I haven't time to go to bed nor be sick. I began this some time ago and goodness knows when I can finish it. Edgar is so he can be around the house, but I have a very sore little finger on my right hand. They call it run around - is swollen twice its natural size and is very painful but that don't lay me aside from work. Leith expects to find work down town and leave the easy? part for me - to do the washing, ironing, cleaning - cooking sewing and mending to do for 5 - also keep the kids from the street and ect. Well hard work seems to be my luck but you don't know how I dread it, when I hear of a girl baby's death I think of my life and feel what a blessing for the child to have escaped such a life - and also know an innocent child is always saved. Well here goes another "whack" at it. My finger is some better but very painful yet. As I can't write with my left hand must make this letter short. Leith went to spend the night with a friend and Dad went shrimping and Edgar and I are alone. He is asleep. I am glad you are doing so well financially - hope you can get a home of your own. That is a splendid little picture of the baby and I guess the other one is Leith, although it doesn't look as she did 2 years ago. I am glad to get it anyway. I should say you did get a bargain on that bedding - wish we got one like it. My hand hurts to I'll stop and write a letter when it gets well. It's very warm and flowers are in bloom - grass is green. It's beautiful this time of year. How do you feel after the war? I was so glad and cried. Wonder when Bruce will come back.

With love, Mother
