DateLocationDescription
1912In 1912 WILLIAM S. BALDWIN is postmaster of Taunton, the proprietor of a flour and feed store and a stock dealer. He has resided in Minnesota all his life and is among the early settlers of Lyon county, having first come here when less than twelve years of age.

William Baldwin was born near Troy, Winona county, Minnesota, August 12, 1860. His parents were Solomon and Ellen (Canfield) Baldwin, natives, respectively, of Pennsylvania and New York State. They were pioneer residents of Winona county and died there when our subject was a child. There are four children in the family: Lucy Robinson, of St. Charles, Minnesota; William S., of this biography; Fred, of Langdon, North Dakota: and George, of Winona.

The year of arrival to Lyon county was 1872, when William Baldwin was a lad eleven years of age. The railroad which was then building toward Lyon county—the Winona & St. Peter—had only reached Sleepy Eye, and the trip was made in a covered wagon from Chatfield. The trip was made with the family of Henry P. Gibbs and for three years our subject lived with that family on the homestead on section 14, Fairview township. Then Mr. Gibbs lost his life in one of the winter storms and young Baldwin went to live with the Castor family, over the line in Redwood county. The next winter he attended school in Marshall and from that time until 1893 he lived in and in the vicinity of the county seat.

During that period Mr. Baldwin worked at various occupations. He was street commissioner of Marshall one year, operated a feed barn for some time, and engaged in farming land for Marshall residents. In 1893 Mr. Baldwin rented land from his father-in-law near Minneota, farmed it three years, and has ever since then resided in Taunton. He worked at the carpenter's trade and general work until he was appointed postmaster on December 24, 1907. Since then he has conducted a flour and feed store and engaged in the stock business as well as care for the postoffice. Before the incorporation of Taunton Mr. Baldwin served as justice of the peace of Eidsvold township and he has served several terms as a member of the Taunton Village Council. He is a member of the M. W. A. lodge.

Mr. Baldwin was married at Minneota October 1, 1892, to Bessie Walsh, a native of Springfield, Illinois. To this union two children, Leo and Elenor, were born. Mrs. Baldwin died December 7, 1896. The second marriage of our subject occurred at Ghent on January 18, 1900. when he wedded Annie Helvig, a native of Chicago. George, Margaret and Lester are their children.

M, b. 28 January 1835, d. 21 February 1923
Father*Henry Degenhardt b. 1802, d. 1879
Mother*Christine Guenther d. 1836
Life EventDateDescription
Birth28 January 1835Michael Jacob Degenhardt was born on 28 January 1835 at Germany also reported as Sep 1833.
He was the son of Henry Degenhardt and Christine Guenther.
Marriage16 September 1862Michael Jacob Degenhardt married Elizabeth Mikesch on 16 September 1862 at St. Andrews, Tennyson, Grant, Wisconsin.
Death21 February 1923Michael Jacob Degenhardt died on 21 February 1923 at Mt. Hope, Grant, Wisconsin, at age 88 Michael Degenhardt, one of the pioneer residents of West Grant, died at his home in the township of Mt. Hope, Wednesday of last week, February 21st, at the ripe old age of 88 years, after a comparatively brief illness. Mr. Degenhardt was born in Germany January 28, 1835, and he and a brother came to the United States about 1855. Their first stop in this country was at Chicago, which was then but a struggling small city, the major part of its present site being swamp land. Mr. Degenhardt cut swamp grass with a scythe where some of the largest buildings of that city now stand. Later he helped to build the line of the Illinois Central Railway running west from Dubuque; then he came to Grant county and settled at Potosi, being employed at farm work in that vicinity for a time. Later he bought eighty acres of rough land near there, cleaned it up and started farming, but had hard luck financially and lost the place. He then rented farms around Hurrican for several years, after which he went to Mt. Hope township and bought the farm which was his home until he died.
Mr. Degenhardt was married at Tennyson, this county, on September 16, 1862 to Elizabeth Mikesch. To this union were born ten children, nine of whom, with the aged wife and mother, survive as follows:-- Kate (Mrs. Charles Decker) of Campbell Ridge;--Henry, at home; Theodore, of Bloomington;--Mary (Mrs. John Ertz) of Lancaster;--Ann (Mrs. Will Zenz) Potosi;--Adolph, Stillwater, Minnesota;--Frank, Charles, and Lewis, Mt. Hope;--one daughter, Regina, died in infancy. There are also twenty-eight grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.
Mr. and Mrs. Degenhardt celebrated their Sixtieth wedding anniversary last September at which time most of the immediate relatives were present.
The above is the life history of a sturdy pioneer who by dint fo his own efforts achieved success in carving a fine farm out of a near wilderness. He was a good citizen, neighbor and friend and his death is regretted by all his acquaintances. He himself was more than content to have lived so long beyond his allotted time and the end was neither unexpected nor unwelcome to him.
Funeral services were held last Friday at St Mary's Catholic Church in Bloomington, Rev. Pollack officiating, Interment was in the village Catholic cemetery.

He went to Galena to learn the trade with Jacob Sutter. He then went on a steamboat one year; then to Dubuque; finished the trade; then went to Lansing, Iowa; then returned to Dubuque. He enlisted in the 12th Iowa V. I. in 1862; but they would not receive him. He came to Cassville in 1864, and engaged in the saloon business in 1865, and then returned to Dubuque. His wife, Catharine Zeng, was born at Potosi, Grant Co., April 28, 1843. History of Grant County, Wisconsin 1881 - John B Ortscheis (Ortscheid) biography
1901In 1901 JOHN B. ORTSCHEID, a prominent real estate dealer, notary public and conveyancer, of Cassville, Grant county, was born in Alsace, France, Dec. 2, 1842, a son of Joseph and Mary Ann (BLINT) ORTSCHEID, also natives of Alsace; there the father died in 1851. Six years later the widowed mother, accompanied by her son, John B., and daughter, Magdalena, came to America. They took passage on board a sailing vessel at Havre, and after fifty-six days spent upon the Atlantic, reached New York in safety. They crossed the country by rail to East Dubuque, Ill., and from there came up the river on a steamer to Cassville, Wis., landing here Aug. 27, 1857. The mother died at this place in 1869. She had nine children, five of whom became residents of Cassville, and of these we have record of Frank Joseph, who located here in 1856, but is now living in East Galena, Ill., and owns a valuable farm of 640 acres of land; Andrew also came to Cassville in 1856, and now makes his home at North Andover, Grant county; Magdalena died in Cassville; and John B., still a resident of this place.

John B. ORTSCHEID was a lad of fourteen years when he arrived in Cassville, which town at that time contained but twelve or fourteen families. Here he at first worked as a day laborer, but later learned the baker's trade at Dubuque and Galena, and in 1864 embarked in the bakery and saloon business at Cassville, continuing until April, 1865. Four years later he erected a good frame building, where he successfully conducted a bakery and restaurant for thirty-one years, or until 1899, when he sold out. For a number of years he has handled real estate, and now devotes his entire time to that business, being the only exclusive real estate dealer in Cassville. He handles both village and farm property in Cassville and Patch Grove townships, has property for sale in the Red River valley, Minn., and is doing quite a large and profitable business.

At Dubuque, Feb. 4, 1864, Mr. ORTSCHEID was united in marriage with Miss Catharine ZEUG, a native of Potosi, Grant county, and a daughter of Peter and Barbara (CATERNINE) ZEUG. Her father was born in Germany, and on coming to this country in 1830, located in Dubuque, but the following year took up his residence in Potosi, where he now lives at the advanced age of ninety-eight years. During his active business life he followed mining and farming. His wife died in 1886. In their family were the following children: Peter, who died in San Francisco, Cal; Frank and Burnhard, both residents of Iowa; William, now in Grant river; John (2), who died young; Mrs. Barbara BLUEMER, of Potosi; Mrs. Barbara CASPARS, of Cassville; and Mrs. Catharine ORTSCHEID. Fourteen children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. ORTSCHEID, namely: Edward P., who died at Seattle, Wash., in 1897, aged thirty-two years; Amelia, who died in Cassville, in 1867; Josephine Clara, a Sister of Notre Dame, Grand Rapids; Mary Barbara, a Sister of Notre Dame, Prairie du Chien; Lena, who married Charles STARR, of La Crosse, Wis., and died in 1896; Anna, who married Jacob SCHUH, and has three children, Clarence, Paul, and Irma, of Milwaukee, Wis; William P., a jeweler of Cassville; Maggie, who married Frank B. BURDICK, and has three children, Edward McKINLEY, Florence and Agnes; Bernhart William, who was born in Cassville, Jan. 17, 1873, and died on the 21st of the following February; Louisa Mary, wife of Albert KLEINPELL, of Colesburg, Iowa; Matthew Bernard, now a barber, and real estate and collection agent of Chicago, who enlisted in the State Guards of Wisconsin, and was a member of Company G, 4th Wis. V.I., in the Spanish-American war; George Washington; Florence Mary, a resident of Milwaukee; and Agnes Otillia, at home.

Mr. ORTSCHEID and his family hold membership in the Catholic Church, and he is also a charter member of Branch No. 34, Catholic Knights. In connection with his other business he is also interested in mining and in quarrying stone for building purposes. His home property consists of about twenty-six acres in the village corporation, upon which he has erected a pleasant residence. In 1862, during the Civil war, he tried to enlist in the 12th Iowa V.I., but being under age he was rejected. Politically Mr. ORTSCHEID was first a Republican, but is now a supporter of the Democratic party. Being one of the leading and influential citizens of his town, he has been called upon to fill several local positions of honor and trust. He has served as road overseer and township treasurer; was village treasurer from 1893 to 1898; constable from 1876 to 1880; justice of the peace from 1880 to 1894, during which time he married sixty-three couples; and was member of the village trustees in 1900. He is a man of excellent business and executive ability, whose sound judgment, unflagging enterprise and capable management have brought to him a well-merited success.
