He was born Feb. 21, 1914 in Callaway Township, Becker County, to Ambrose and Clara (Mertens) Kahnke. He grew up in the White Earth area, where he attended rural school. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II under General Bradley in the American Theater and the European African Middle East Theater. He married Lillian Margaret Stancer on Sept. 16, 1941 in Redwood Falls. they lived and farmed at Ogema, then later moved to Hector. He managed the American Legion in Hector. He was a member of St. John's Catholic Church, and the Fairfax V.F.W.
