Birth12 December 1918Bernice L. Long was born on 12 December 1918 at Wisconsin.
She was the daughter of William Wayne Long and Leona Amanda Long.
Marriage16 October 1949Bernice L. Long married Leonard Sumwalt, son of James Archie Sumwalt and Nellie Jane Kittle, on 16 October 1949.
Death29 March 2017Bernice L. Long died on 29 March 2017 at age 98 Bernice L. (nee Long) Sumwalt, 98, died Wednesday, March 29, at Azura Memory
Care in Sheboygan, WI. Born Dec. 12, 1918, in Richland Center, WI, she was the daughter of Leona and Wayne Long. She grew up on farms in Richland County, graduated from Richland Center High School, and attended the Richland County Teachers College.

Bernice worked at the Badger Munitions Factory near Sauk City during WWII. She married Leonard Sumwalt on Oct. 16, 1949, in Mooresville, Ind. in a service officiated by Rev. Don Sumwalt. Bernice and Leonard bought a farm 1 mile north of Loyd, later added an adjacent farm, where they lived until 1997. They raised Holsteins, pigs, sheep, chickens, rabbits, vegetables, and four children. Bernice taught Sunday school, sang in the choir, and cooked for many a potluck and banquet at the Loyd (now Willow Valley) United Methodist Church. She loved to bake bread, garden, can vegetables, sing, and read. She valued education, taught songs and nursery rhymes to her children and grandchildren, and was proud her children graduated from college. After Leonard’s death in 1998 Bernice lived in Richland Center; then lived with daughter Ruth for 11 years in Sheboygan, WI. Her final home was Azura Memory Care where, to the delight of staff, she often broke into memorized verse and songs from childhood.

Survivors include four children; John (Jo) of Loyd, Alan (Linda) of Dousman, Robert (Susan) Patterson-Sumwalt of Mequon, and Ruth (Bruce) Smith of Sheboygan; seven grandchildren, Kathryn, Jessica, Orrin, Nelson, Andrew, Marshall, and Parker; and five great-grandchildren, Phoebe, Isaac, Faye, Lily, and Leonard.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Florence, Mary & Kathryn, and brothers Robert, Max, Theron, and Verne.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, April 7, 2017 at the Pratt Memorial Chapel in
Richland Center, WI. Visitation will be held Thursday, April 6, 2017 from 5:00 to 8:00 PM and again Friday, April 7, 2017 from 10:00 AM until the time of service at 11:00 AM at the Pratt Memorial Chapel. Lunch and fellowship will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made, in Bernice’s name, to Bookworm Gardens, Sheboygan WI, where Bernice loved to smell the flowers and watch the children play. The Pratt Funeral and Cremation Service is assisting the family with their arrangements.
