She leaves to mourn her loss her loving husband and her 2 sons, Durlin, 15 and James 8 months; her parents Mr & Mrs. F. William Droes; 2 brothers, Lorenz Droes and Amos Droes; 1 sister, Myrtle nee Droes Shulka; and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Sunday at St Peters Lutheran Church and burial was in the church cemetery.

Samuel moved to 96 District S. C. with his father in 1775, and while he was there, he enlisted in Craven County, 96 District as a Private (also a horseman) in the Revolutionary War under Captain James Harvey, Major Downes, and Colonel Williams on July 1, 1778, and served for 5 months. He served in the campaign against the Cherokee Indians, Battle of Seneca, and one other Indian town, and then reenlisted in 96 District on April 1, 1779 served under Captain Henry Pawling and Colonel Williams, and was discharged at Cowpens, North Carolina on January 10, 1780. He reeinlisted in 96 District on April 1, 1780, and served 4 months under his father, and Lt. Col. Hayes, destroying large amounts Tory property at Indian Creek. He was at the Engagement at William’s Fort, and the battles of Musgrove’s Mill, Cowpens, and the affair on Bush River. He was taxed in Buckingham County, Virginia in 1782, and probably married there. On December 14, 1784, he purchased 240 acres on the Saluda River, in Greenville County, 96 District, South Carolina. At Charleston on October 11, 1785, the Auditor General was directed to receive and audit the accounts of John and Samuel Ridgeway. He filed a Revolutionary War claim in South Carolina between August 20, 1783, and August 31, 1786. He resided in Greenville County in 1790 with one son and four daughters. On June 29, 1798, Samuel and Catherine sold 140 acres on the east side of the Reedy River in Laurens County, South Carolina (granted to Samuel in 1786) to John Ridgeway. According to family tradition, Samuel’s daughter, Nancy, says she was born in Virginia in 1784, and carried to South Carolina at age six (months/1784) by her parents. On December 11, 1800/January 26, 1801, Samuel purchased 25 acres on Peachling Creek of the Reedy River in Laurens County from Edmond Ragsdale, and resided there in 1800 (22010- 11110). On January 12, 1803/June 4, 1803, he sold 35 acres on Peaching’s Creek of the Reedy River to Andrew Arnold (granted to Samuel on December 19, 1784). In 1804, he moved to Ross County, Ohio, and later to Pike County, Pee Pee Township, Ohio, where he died on August 29, 1835. He was pensioned for his war service while living in Pike County, Ohio on October 3, 1833. Catherine was born on October 23, 1762, and died on November 24, 1819. They are buried in Ridgeway Cemetery. Samuel sold land in Ross County, Crooked Creek, Ohio to their son, Jonathan on December 23, 1826.

On April 4, 1758, he witnessed a deed between Benjamin Arnold and Samuel Powell in Louisa County, St. Martin's Parish, Virginia (land was on the Paumunkey River). He purchased 142 acres on both sides of Doe Creek in Buckingham County, Virginia on April 27, 1763 (adjacent Benjamin Arnold). He was taxed in Buckingham County, Virginia in 1773 and 1774. John moved to South Carolina in 1775, and lived in the “Big Sycamore” during the Revolution. He was taxed in 96 District, South Carolina in 1779. He was a Captain in the South Carolina Militia under Colonel Joseph Hayes and Colonel Levi Casey in that war, and fought in the engagements at Augusta, Young’s, and the Battle of Cowpens. He was killed by the Tories in South Carolina on September 3, 1781.
