Virgil was born March 12, 1923, at Irene, South Dakota to Martin and Inga (Enebo) Johnson. He served as a B-24 navigator in World War II and spent 11 months as a prisoner of war in Germany and Poland. In 1946 he married Judith Ellefson at Trondhjem Lutheran Church, Volin, SD. He graduated from Irene High School, Augustana College, and Luther Theological Seminary and was ordained as a Lutheran minister in 1950. He served four churches in the White Earth, ND parish and 3 churches in the Parker, SD, parish. In 1960 he established Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer as a home mission congregation in Watertown, SD. He served the final twenty-two years of his formal ministry at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls, retiring in 1988.

Grateful to have shared his life are his wife, Judy, his daughter, Janet (Jim) Keck, Wahpeton, IA, his son, Marvin (Sheila) Johnson, Cottage Grove, MN, his daughter Karen Johnson, Sioux Falls, grandchildren Eric, Peder, Leif, Jenny, Jamie, Karstin, Rachel, Emily, Nate and Jenn, great-grandchildren Kramer, Alicia, Flora and Piper, two brothers, I. Murray (Marguerite) Johnson and Elmer (Nancy) Johnson, one sister, Eleanor (Floyd) Florey, many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Isabelle (Helmer) Haugland.

Virgil was a member of First Lutheran Church, several ministerial associations, Augustana Fellows, Center for Western Studies, Sons of Norway, Norse Federation, Opdals Lag, Ex Prisoners of War and the Watertown Cosmopolitan Club. He served on the Good Samaritan Evangelical Society Advisory Board, the Augustana Alumni Council and the Norwegian Studies Association Steering Committee. He also enjoyed the quiet serenity of the family cabin in the Black Hills.

The funeral service will be Saturday, September 2nd , at First Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls.

Memorials may be directed to the Augustana College Norwegian Studies Association or the Media Ministries of First Lutheran and Our Savior's Lutheran Church.

Pastor Virgil Johnson was a humble servant of the Lord who dedicated his life to serving Jesus and sharing the love of Christ.
