Life EventDateDescription
Birth9 December 1909Pearl L. Ivory was born on 9 December 1909 at South Dakota.
She was the daughter of Thomas Kennedy Ivory and Rose Caroline Rempp.
Marriage27 February 1949Pearl L. Ivory married Richard Crawford on 27 February 1949.
Death8 April 2014Pearl L. Ivory died on 8 April 2014 at South Dakota at age 104 Pearl L. Crawford, 104, of New Underwood, passed away April 8, 2014 at Rapid City Regional Hospital, following a brief illness. She had been residing at the New Underwood Good Samaritan Center since October 2011.
Pearl was born December 9, 1909 to Rose Caroline Ivory and Thomas Kennada Ivory in Yankton County, South Dakota. In January of 1910 Thomas, Rose and four children rode the train from Yankton to New Underwood where Thomas had previously claimed some land north of the Belle Fourche River near what is known as Clough, SD.
They loaded a team and wagon and crossed the Belle Fourche River in January 1910 during a spring thaw, with four children and their worldly belongings. Marie, John, Melvin and Pearl were about to experience the wide open space of western South Dakota.
Later, five more children would be born to the Ivory family – Roy, Willard, Sidney, Florence and Winnie. Florence died as a baby in 1906. Pearl went to grade school at several locations and received her 8th grade diploma from the Shoun School.
Shortly thereafter, she moved to Mt. Pleasant, Iowa to live with her sister Marie. There she waited tables and cooked in restaurants during the Depression.
During the war years, she worked in a bomb factory loading bombs with explosives to help the war effort.
After the war, she decided to attend Beauty College and attain her Cosmetology Degree. She began a long and successful career as a beautician in Iowa.
She later met and married Richard Crawford, a barber, on February 27, 1949, and they established a successful barber and beauty shop in Ames, Iowa.
They later moved to Colorado and then to Arizona cutting and styling hair all the way. Richard passed away September 15, 1991 and Pearl moved back to Rapid City in 1996 to be closer to family and friends.
Aunt Pearl was a very classy lady with hair always perfectly styled in a way only she could perfect. She always liked to dress up and go somewhere to eat, drink and be happy; especially Deadwood, where she liked to pull the handles.
Pearl was a very hard worker, fixing friend's and family's hair.
She also loved to cook and entertain with great detail. It was nothing for her to cook a five course meal and she would do it with flair. She loved to write letters and did so into her later years.
Her handwriting had a special personal touch to it with sketching, pictures, and color, especially during the holidays. Pearl also enjoyed painting pictures well into her 90's. Pearl and her sister Winnie Bruns enjoyed some time traveling together.
One special trip was when they went to Brussels, Belgium and Ireland.
She is survived by her stepdaughter Anne (Don) Woodard; several nieces; and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Rosie and Thomas Ivory; nine brothers and sisters; and her husband Richard Crawford.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established at the New Underwood Good Samaritan Center.
Funeral services will be held at 10 am Monday, April 14, 2014 at Kirk Funeral Home with Fr. Bill Zandri officiating. Interment will follow at the New Underwood Cemetery.

Name VariationWinnie Mae Ivory was also known as Hennie.

Life EventDateDescription
Birth23 May 1923Winnie Mae Ivory was born on 23 May 1923 at Viewfield, Meade, South Dakota.
She was the daughter of Thomas Kennedy Ivory and Rose Caroline Rempp.
Marriage19 September 1944Winnie Mae Ivory married Reinold Joseph Bruns on 19 September 1944 at Haakon, South Dakota.
Death7 February 2011Winnie Mae Ivory died on 7 February 2011 at Pennington, South Dakota, at age 87 NEW UNDERWOOD - Winnie Mae Bruns, 87, passed away peacefully Monday, Feb. 7, 2011, at the Good Samaritan Society, New Underwood.

Winnie was born May 23, 1923, at her Viewfield home to Rose Caroline and Thomas Kenada Ivory. She was the youngest of 10 children all delivered at home. Being the youngest child had its advantages; but also was accompanied by a lot of teasing and playful pranks as she grew up; as Mom would often tell. Winnie grew up during the troubled times of the Great Depression, which formed her hardworking, independent and proud spirit.

Winnie attended grade school in the Viewfield community and attended New Underwood High School, graduating with the class of 1941. Shortly thereafter, she met the love of her life, Reinold Joseph Bruns, and they were married in 1944. They had four children in the succeeding years: Thomas Edward, Donald Joseph, Gale Michael and Rose Marie. Reinold and Winnie purchased the Bruns family farm where they raised their family by farming, raising cattle and milking cows. It took many long hours, days and years of hard work to make it a successful endeavor. Mom, while raising the family, would also help with the outside chores, putting up hay, milking the cows and caring for a large garden and canning many items for year-round enjoyment.

Winnie eventually went to work for the United States Postal Service, serving as the Assistant Postmaster at New Underwood and serving as a clerk at the Rapid City office. She also worked at the Box Elder Post Office and substituted on many rural delivery routes. She really enjoyed working for the Postal Service.

Her greatest disappointment in life was that she and Reinold could not enjoy the fruits of their labor together as Reinold passed away unexpectedly in May of 1970. At that time they were planning on moving into New Underwood. Mom then built a house in town, and she and Rose Marie moved into it in 1972. Mom loved her house and enjoyed taking care of it and the big yard where she could be seen riding her lawn mower and taking care of her flowers, trees and yard and also keeping her car spotlessly clean.

Mom continued to work and attended hundreds of school events over the years. She could often be found sitting at the top of the bleachers cheering the teams on and offering her advice after the games. Mom loved sports, especially basketball, rodeo and football and would often drive many miles to attend events. Mom loved to sew, play cards, listen to music and cook - for a few or a crowd.

Winnie retired from the Postal Service in 1986 after 21 years of service. Winnie was a member of St. John's Catholic Church and attended church faithfully until her health began to fail. Mom was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in New Underwood and was especially proud of her family's service in the military.

Winnie is survived by a sister, Pearl, four children, nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren: (son) Thomas and his wife, Vicki, and their children, Jennifer (Ravi) Bhalla, Christy and Melissa, and their grandchildren, Bea and Josie Bhalla and Ava Lindner; (son) Donald and his wife, Janice, and their children, Erin and Dana (George) Gehringer, and their grandchildren, Bryant Bruns, Ryan and Katie Gehringer; (son) Gale and his wife, Wendy, and their children, Lisa (Neal) Nachtigall and Gregory and his wife, Marsha, and their grandchildren, Austin, Aaron and Ashley Nachtigall and Maxwell and John Reinold Bruns; and (daughter) Rose Marie (Bruce) Simmons and children, Boe and Kyle and grandchild, Hallee Simmons. Winnie is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Rose and Thomas; and eight brothers and sisters, Marie, John, Florence, Melvin, Roy, Bill, Sidney and Florris.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., with 6:30 p.m. rosary services Friday, Feb. 11 at Kirk Funeral Home in Rapid City and then at the church for one hour before services.

Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 12, at St. John's Catholic Church in New Underwood with Father Bill Zandri as celebrant. Interment will follow at the New Underwood Cemetery.

DateLocationDescription
1850Lars Iverson and Guro Christoferson immigrated in 1850.
1913In 1913 Deeply engraven on the pages of the history of Allamakee county is the name of Lars Iverson, who came to this part of Iowa in 1854 and who in the course of a long, honorable and worthy life firmly intrenched himself in the regard, esteem and confidence of the entire community. He was born in the province of Hardanger, Norway, June 16, 1821, and spent his youth and early manhood in his native country. He there married Miss Guro Christoferson, also a native of Norway, born in April, 1819, and with his wife he came to America in 1851. For three years thereafter they made their home in Orleans county, New York, and in 1854 came west to Iowa, locating in Allamakee county in pioneer times. Their first home in this state was in a dugout opposite that occupied by Jacob Dahl and his family, near the present site of the Dahl homestead, and they continued to reside in this crude dwelling for one year, after which they purchased a farm whereon the remainder of their lives was spent. This land lies on section 13, Paint Creek township, and when it came into Mr. Iverson's possession was entirely unimproved. With characteristic energy he set himself to develop the place, clearing the timber and erecting a log house which has been incorporated into the fine modern dwelling now standing upon the homestead. This little log cabin still remains a happy memory to Mr. Iverson's children and his daughter, Mrs. Espeland, says that although she has now attained the ambition of her earlier years and has a modern and well furnished home, yet she has never seen any house which looked quite so neat as her mother's log cabin after a fresh coat of whitewash. Upon this property in Paint Creek township Mr. Iverson continued to reside for many years, steadily carrying forward the work of improvement and cultivation, success rapidly rewarding his well directed and practical labors. The farm became a valuable and productive property, reflecting everywhere its owner's careful management and constant supervision, and it constitutes today a notable contribution to the agricultural resources of this section of Allamakee county.
Mr. and Mrs. Iverson became the parents of three children: Julia, deceased; Mrs. Dale, of Union county, South Dakota; and Mrs. Espeland, who with her husband resides upon the Iverson homestead. Mr. Iverson was a devout member of the Lutheran church and he gave his political allegiance to the democratic party, serving as school director and as township trustee and on numerous occasions going to Waukon for jury duty. He was never so busy that his township could not call upon him for cooperation in public affairs and any project which he believed beneficial to the community received his earnest endorsement and hearty support. His long residence in this part of the state made him very widely known and his sterling qualities gained him the good-will and confidence of all with whom he was associated in business or social relations. He left to his family the priceless heritage of untarnished name and an example that is well worthy of emulation when, on the 28th of February, 1901, he passed away.
