MarriageJuly 1912Robert Norman Wisdom married Nina May Cattnach, daughter of Hugh Cattnach and Harriet Ellen Thurtell, in July 1912.
DeathApril 1950Robert Norman Wisdom died in April 1950 at Calgary, Canada.
DateLocationDescription
ROBERT NORMAN WISDOM - Sec-Treas., Norquay - Mr. Robert Norman Wisdom, was born in Orangville, Ontario in 1886 of Irish descent. He was the youngest of ten children. The family moved to Toronto when he was very young, there he received his education, sang in the church choir and worked in the picture framing department of Eaton's store. Having an urge to go west and seek adventure, he and his friend Bill Watson, heard of a carload of settler's effects being shipped west to George Cranston Senior in June 1904. Mr. Clary was in charge of the car and would allow them to stow away. Regardless of the entireties and tears of his mother and sisters, who were certain he would be scalped by Indians, Wisdom left Toronto , June 4, 1904 at the age of 17 with $15 in his pocket. He arrived in Olds ten days later. He worked for various homesteaders gaining experience. In 1906 he filed on a homestead north west of Sunnyslope. His two sisters, Mrs. Lem Evans and Mrs. George Cranston, spent some time with him while the men were building homes on land they had filed in the Trochu district. Mr. Wisdom was a welcome guest at all parties held in the neighbourhood, as he always had his violin and played at the country dances. He spent considerable time with the Haye and Dundas families as he was always happy to partake of a home cooked meal. In 1908, The Cattnach family came to Olds and Norman was a constant visitor. In 1910 Acme was incorporated into a village and Mr. Wisdom was appointed secretary of the Municipality which was then known as the Local Improvement District. In 1911 he bought a farm machine business from Jessie Gouge in Acme and rented the rooms above it to travellers passing through. Dick Kimmel, a boyhood friend of the Cattnach family, persuaded them to come to Alberta. They settled in the Bennett district. In 1909 the Mother died and Nina May was forced to quit school to keep house and care for the younger children. She thought she would never learn to make a loaf of bread that anyone could eat. The kindness of a neighbour, Mrs. Sick, was never forgotten. Father Cattnach was a strict Scotch gentleman with a heart of gold. He took the girls to the country dances and sat there until the wee hours in the morning to escort them home. Norman and Nina were married in Calgary in July 1912. They moved into the rooms above the machine shop. Norman's sister, Mrs. C. H. Nelson, her husband and niece, also Ray Watson, lived there too while they were waiting to build a house. Norman Wisdom had on the first cars in Acme. He bought a little cottage from J. H. Brown. The first visit of Mrs. Wisdom senior was always remembered affectionally by Nina, as the Irish grandmother was overheard to say, "I say, Norman has a clean wife, she even sweeps under the beds." At which Nina's sisters nearly died of laughter as they knew she had heard every word. Norma Wisdom was born in 1917. Her Dad had always said that he wanted seven stalwart sons, but changed his mind after Norma was born. She was taken to all the dances as a child, while her Dad performed as master of ceremonies. They had a big double bed in the ladies room at the old hall, where the coats were hung and the children slept on it. Baby sitters were unheard of in those days. A good time was had by all. Mr. Wisdom owned the implement and garage business known as Wisdom Motors for 27 years. He also owned a 3/4 section of land south west of Acme, now owned by Del Bates. Norman and his wife took an active part in the community affairs. He remained secretary-treasurer for Norquay until the end of 1920. He was a member of the Acme Elks, the I.O.O. F. And the Rebekahs. As member of the Acme United Church, he served on the Church Board for many years, and for ten years he was on the Acme School Board. Norma married Ole Wenstob. They lived in Alix for awhile and then took over the Wisdom Moters in Acme for 15 years. In 1955, they moved to Vancouver with their two children. Mr. Wisdom undertook the organization of Victory Loans in the district during the second World War. He also worked with George Hope the first for the Old Timers Association and Keiver's Lake Hall. Mrs. Wisdom was an active member of the church and took an active part in the Rebekah and the O.O.R.P. Lodges. Mr. Wisdom sold the garage business in 1936. They moved to Calgary in 1947, where Norman died after a lengthy illness, April 1950 at the age of 64. Mrs. Wisdom moved to the coast with Ray Watson in 1952. She died Oct. 1, 1965 at the age of 73 after a severe illness.

Mr. DAN WITWER, First Land Assessor for Norquay - Mr. Dan Witwer was born in New Hamburg, Ontario. In 1904 he arrived in Didsbury. He homesteaded at Tapscot, where was the first post office near Acme. It was located north-east of Acme, the land known as the Ernie Smith place and now the Reg Bates' farm. In 1918 he married Amy Cattnach from Sterlingville. This was the halfway post office between Carstairs and Acme. Amy Cattnach recorded the story of her family in "The Heritage of Bancroft". The Witwers have two sons, La Vern who farms 3 1/2 miles west of Acme and Howard with the air force based in Trenton, Ontario. In the year 1919 Mr. Witwer was appointed the first land assessor for the M.D. of Norquay # 279 at a salary of five hundred dollars for a year. He did his land assessing n horse back. Most of it was done during the winter months. He recalled bring terribly cold on many occasion. As he had no formal training and no soil samples were taken at the that time, he more of less took the farmers word for the value of the land. In 1923 Mr. Witwer served as councillor. He began the 1924 term but late in the year he was called to Ontario because of the death of his father. His mother was unable to obtain help so Dan remained for two years to assist her with the farm. He wired council that he would not be available for election in 1925. On his returned to Alberta, he became land assessor once again for the council. Mr. Witwer was active in both church and lodge work. He was an elder of the United Church and a member of the I. O. O. F. Lodge. He retired in 1949 and now resides in Calgary. Mr. Witwer, like many of the councillors spent a great deal of time doing road work.
