Burns, 66, formerly of Hamilton died in Butte March 27 of complications from injuries he sustained in a fall earlier in the month. Father Burns was born Jan. 18, 1928, to James D. and Irene Burns of Butte. He attended St Joseph School in Butte through the sixth grade, then attended St Anthony School in Missoula for grades seven and eight. After a year of high school in Missoula, he moved with his family to Los Angeles, where he graduated from Loyola High School. He studied at the University of Portland and the University of California before completing his degree at Carroll College in 1952. He attended St. Edward Seminary in Kenmore, Wash., and was ordained a priest by Bishop Joseph M. Gilmore of Helena on May 19, 1956. He was assistant pastor at Holy Rosary Parish, Bozeman; St Mary Parish, Livingston, in the Great Hamilton. Falls-Billings Diocese; and St. Lawrence Parish, Walkerville. He served as pastor of St John the Baptist Parish, Frenchtown, St. Mary Parish, Stevensville, 1969-71; and St Francis of Assisi Parish, Hamilton, 1971-83. He began his final assignment at Holy Spirit Parish in July 1983. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, John F. Bums, and a sister, Marion Taylor. He is survived by three aunts and three nieces. Funeral Mass was March 30 at St. Ann Parish, Butte. Father Raymond V. Gilmore was principal celebrant and Father Robert C. Noonan was homilist. Interment followed at Holy Cross Cemetery. There will be a Memorial Mass for Father Burns at 1 1 a.m. Saturday at St. Francis Church in Hamilton.

Lawrence was born on the family farm in Plain on Sept. 11, 1916, son of the late Frank and Frances (Bayer) Brechtl. He married Kathryn E. Ganser on Jan. 17, 1939, at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Sauk City. They lived in Sauk City for a short time where Lefty worked for Frank and Helen Kirchstein at their market on Water Street. They moved back to Plain and lived on the Mike Alt Farm and later took over the family farm which they ran until it was sold to the Franklin Plain Corporation in 1967. That property is now homes in the Westbrook subdivision and part of the Westbrook Golf Course. After his retirement from farming, he drove school bus for the River Valley School District, served on the Village of Plain Board of Trustees, and was a member of the Sauk County Board of Supervisors for more than 25 years. Some of his best times were spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, visits with his siblings to the Nachreiner cabin and an "occasional" stop at the casino. Besides his wife of 66 years, Kathryn, survivors include a daughter, Linda (Herb) Paulus of Plain; three grandchildren, Dan (Deb) Paulus of Spring Green, Genny Paulus of Plain, and Jody (Darren) Breunig of Sauk City; and three great-grandchildren, Sheyanne and Zachary Paulus, and Riley Breunig. He is further survived by a brother, Victor (Marinanne) Brechtl of Monona; and three sisters, Florence (Norbert) Hellenbrand of Cross Plains, Marie Liegel and Imelda (Ferdie) Nachreiner of Plain. Besides his parents, he was preceded by a brother, Herb Brechtl; and sisters, Alma Alt Ruhland and Irene Schweiss. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2005, at ST. LUKE'S CATHOLIC CHURCH, Plain. Father Mike Resop will officiate. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Friends may call on Wednesday from 3 p.m. until the time of service all at the church in Plain. Richardson-Stafford Funeral Home, Spring Green, is in charge of the arrangements.

Death5 April 2015Kathryn E. Ganser died on 5 April 2015 at age 95 Kathryn E. “Kate” Brechtl passed peacefully on Sunday, April 5, 2015 at the Meadows Assisted Living in Spring Green. She was born on April 16, 1919, on the family farm in Sauk City to Christ and Genevieve (Uslemann) Ganser and graduated from Sauk City High School. She was married to Lawrence “Lefty” Brechtl on January 17, 1939 in Sauk City. They eventually settled on the Brechtl Family farm in Plain which later became the Westbrook subdivision and part of the Westbrook golf course. Kate was a member of St Luke’s Catholic Congregation, its ladies CCW and quilting group, the Adult choir and the Catholic Order of Foresters. She was a project leader for many years for the St Luke 4-H club and drove school bus for the River Valley school district. An avid reader, she was instrumental along with a core group in creating a public library in Plain, serving for 27 years on its Board of Directors. She continued reading until her eyesight deteriorated.

Family was her first priority and so enjoyed being a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend. She maintained her beautiful smile and sense of humor to her final days. Survivors include her daughter Linda (Herb) Paulus of Plain, Grandchildren Dan (Deb) Paulus and Genny (Steve Zick) of Spring Green, and Jody (Darren) Breunig of Prairie du Sac; Great-Grandchildren Sheyanne and Zachary Paulus and Riley Breunig; a sister Irene(Howard) Frey and a sister-in-law Phyllis Ganser both of Sauk City, many nieces, nephews, family and friends and everyone at the Meadows who have been her family for the past nine years. Kate loved all of you and we sincerely want to thank them, Home Health Hospice, Fr. Mike Resop and Sister Lynne Marie for your care and concern. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, brothers, Victor, Carleton, Eugene and Dan and sister, Mildred Badger. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, April 10, 2015 at 4:30 P.M. at St. Luke’s Catholic Church in Plain. Fr. Mike Resop will officiate with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held on Friday at the church from 3:00 P.M. until the time of Mass at 4:30 P.M. Memorials may be made to the Kraemer Library or to St. Luke’s Catholic School Endowment Fund.

He was born on Sept. 20, 1922, in Plain, Wis., the son of Frank and Frances (Bayer) Brechtl. Vic graduated from St. Luke’s High School, in Plain, Wis. in 1941. He served in the U.S. Navy in World War II, as a gunner's mate, 2nd class. He also served on three different ships in the Pacific, including Hawaii, Australia, and invasions in New Guinea, Biak, Marshall, Guam and the Philippine Islands. Vic married Marianne Flager of Pardeeville at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Madison on Aug. 25, 1951. He was a member of the Painter's Local Union No. 802 since 1946, before his retirement from the University of Wisconsin-Paint Department.
He was also a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Madison Elks Lodge, UW Service Club, American Legion Post No. 398, and a volunteer for Meals on Wheels for 20 years.
Vic enjoyed vacations with his family, deer hunting with friends in northern Wisconsin, golf, bowling and fishing. He and Marianne enjoyed traveling in their R.V. and camping in state and national parks. Along with sight-seeing they visited state capitals national parks and presidential libraries. They enjoyed spending time together seeing all 50 states and they also had the pleasure of going to Europe eight times. Vic was very proud of his service in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and he had the honor of going on a Badger Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. in May of 2014. Vic is survived by his wife, Marianne; daughter, Ginny (Jon) Jenson of Madison; son, Mark Brechtl (Julien Brugere) of London; three grandsons, David Jenson of Madison, Andrew Jenson of Palo Alto Calif., and Matthew Jenson (Mallory) of Chicago Ill; and sister, Imelda (Mel) Nachreiner. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Thomas; two brothers, Herbert and Lawrence “Lefty”; and four sisters, Alma Ruhland, Irene Schweiss, Florence Hellenbrand and Marie Liegel. A celebration of life will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 14, 2019, with Father Chad Droessler presiding. Burial will be held at Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 9 a.m. until the time of the service on Friday, June 14, 2019.

She was born on Sept. 24, 1920, in Plain, Wis., the daughter of Frances and Frank Brechtl. Florence was united in marriage first to John Stapleton on Feb. 25, 1941, at St. Luke's Church in Plain, Wis., and later to Norbert "Nip" Hellenbrand on April 27, 1963, at St. Francis Church in Cross Plains, Wis. Florence was an active member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church and also of Christian Mothers. She loved to play cards with family and friends. Florence was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. Florence is survived by her husband, "Nip"; daughter, Joyce Ruhland; son, Tim (Kristie) Stapleton; grandchildren, Sherri (Clem) Ring, Lynn (Glenn) Breunig, Mark Ruhland, Jodi (Karl) Lasse, Roby (Jess) Stapleton and Ryan (Jill) Stapleton; great-grandchildren, Courtney (Aaron) Lovell, Cara (Shaun) Glynn, Nick, Nolan and Travis Breunig, Joseph Pickarts, Erin Lasse, Asher and Casen Stapleton and Preslee Stapleton; great-great-grandchild, Chevy Lovell; siblings, Victor (Marianne) Brechtl, Marie Liegel and Mel Nachreiner; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her first husband, John Stapleton; siblings, Herb Brechtl, Alma (Alvin) Ruhland, Lawrence (Kathryn) Brechtl and Irene (Russell) Schweiss; son-in-law, Roger Ruhland; in-laws, Tom Alt, Mike Liegel and Ferdie Nachreiner; and her parents. Mass of Christian burial will be held at ST. FRANCIS XAVIER CATHOLIC CHURCH, 2947 Thinnes St., Cross Plains, at 11 a.m., on Friday, March 11, 2016, with Father Thomas Kelley presiding. Visitation will be held at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the Mass on Friday. Burial will follow at St. Francis Cemetery.

Marie loved housework and taking care of children. She enjoyed playing cards, sewing, and was proud of her post high school education later in life at MATC. She was a member of the Plain American Legion Auxiliary, a lifelong member of St. Luke’s Catholic Church, a woman of strong Christian faith, proud of her years teaching religious education and being a leader of prayers.

Marie is survived by a daughter, Peggy Liegel; two sons, Gilbert and Konrad (Karen) Liegel; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a brother, Victor (Marianne) Brechtl; a sister, Imelda Nachreiner; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Frances Brechtl; her husband, Michael Liegel; a daughter, Karen Liegel at the age of 3; two sons, Michael and Franklyn Liegel; two brothers, Herbert and Lawrence Brechtl; three sisters, Alma Alt Ruhland, Irene Schweiss and Florence Hellenbrand.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, Sept. 6, 2018, at 11 a.m., at ST. LUKE’S CATHOLIC CHURCH in Plain. Father John Silva will officiate, with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held on Thursday at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of Mass at 11 a.m.

Memorials may be made to St. Luke’s Catholic Church. The Richardson-Stafford Funeral Home in Spring Green is assisting the family with the arrangements.

They were attended by Miss Emma Nachreiner, sister of the groom, and John Ederer, nephew of the bride. After the ceremony, which took place at St. Luke's church, the bridal party, together with some of the immediate relatives, partook of a wedding feast at the home of the bride's mother, Mrs. M. Paulus. Both Mr. Nachreiner and Miss Paulus are popular young people, the bride being for the past four years our faithful "hello girl," and the groom is a member of the firm of Reuschlein & Nachreiner. They will reside in the house recently vacated by Peter Plon.
