In 1920, he was living in a mortgaged house in Spring Green village but was still farming. He retired in 1942. John died on a Tuesday at his home. He was survived by his wife, four sons, one daughter, and eight grandchildren. Funeral services were held on Friday at Saint John's in Spring Green with the Rev. Joseph H. Flad officiating. Pall bearers were Gerald and Earl Meise, Walter Ferstl, Joseph and George Weidner, and Virgil Needham.
