While still a little girl her parents sold all of their possessions in their native land and booked passage to America, arriving here in 1870. They first came to Yankton, and from there they were given a ride in a wagon to a point near where the old Kathol home now stands. They were put down on a raw prairie without a person or a house in sight. In the distance was the shack built by their son and brother who had come ahead of them to make a home. Mrs Kathol often told of the awful homesickness that gripped them then, and how, if it had been possible, they would have returned to Germany at once. They set to work, however, and built a dugout and later a log house. They broke sod, built fences and battled drought, blizzards, grasshoppers, and endured every pioneer hardship. October 4, 1881, at the age of 19, Anne married John Kathol and they made their home with her parents until they died. There were fourteen children born in this union, 11 of whom survived. In addition to their own children, they took Clement Weichelman, when a lad of four, and raised him to manhood. Dyptheria had taken Clement Weichelman's family which was very prevalent at that time They lived on the farm now occupied by Ray Kathol until 24 years ago when they retired and moved to Bow Valley. Mr. Kathol died July 12, 1941. In 1937 Mr and Mrs Kathol were honored by the Cedar county news for having more living descendants than any other Cedar County couple. It was a state record at that time. Mrs Anne Kathol was preceded in death by three sons, and her three brothers.

Burial was in St. Michael Cemetery under the direction of the Wintz Funeral home.

He was born August 10, 1891, at Hartington to John and Anna (Bruening) Kathol and died Nov. 28 in The Cedars Nursing Home at Hartington.

On Jan. 25, 1916, he married Ann Burbach at Hartington. She died on March 31, 1961. Mr. Kathol was a retired farmer.

Survivors include three sons, Ralph and James, both of Hartington, and Donald of Omaha; three daughters, Mrs. E. J. (Lavina) Moore of Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., Mrs. George (Marjorie) Barna and Mrs. Richard (Vera) Koch, both of Omaha; 58 grandchildren; 35 great grandchildren; two brothers, Ray and Paul of Hartington; a foster brother, Clem Wiechelman of Hartington; two sisters, Mrs. Joseph (Anna) Marx of New York City and Mrs. Eleanor Noecker of Hartington.

Casket bearers were Gene, Greg, and Bill Kathol, Bob Barna, Scott Koch, and Daniel Moore.

Mrs. Marx was born Feb. 19, 1900 in Bow Valley to John and Anna (Breuning) Kathol and grew up in the Bow Valley area. She married Joseph F. Marx on Feb.19, 1919, in Bow Valley. They lived in Hartington until moving to Omaha in 1945. Her husband died January 1, 1951. She moved to Long Island N.Y. in 1953 and then to Farmington N.H. in 1986. Survivors include: two daughters: Bernice Stolth, Washougal Washington; and Alice
(Mrs Herb) Persan of Echo Point Alton Bay, N.H; two sons Jerome of Minneapolis Minn., and Dwain of Falls City NE; one sister Ella Noecker, Hartington: 13 grandchildren; 3 step-grandchildren; seven great grandchildren: Four step great-grandchildren; and four great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and infant son, Delwin; seven brothers John, Joe, Alphonse, Lawrence, Paul, Art and Ray Kathol; four sisters, Ida Hochstein,
Veronica Wuebben, Martha Schulte, and Dorothy Sudbeck.
