The Gospel Assembly Church here concerned is one of the churches of a type of religious society or denomination which was founded in 1911 by a man known as the Reverend Mr. W.M. Sowders. This church was started by the present minister, the Reverend Mr. Mullineaux, when he came to Wichita in 1941. The evidence shows that the Reverend Mr. Sowders was the leader of the denomination until his death in 1951 or 1952; that thereafter, a man referred to as a Reverend Mr. Jolly attempted to take the place of Sowders, but that throughout the country, many of the Gospel Assembly ministers objected to the Jolly teachings and refused to follow him. It would appear that certain schisms were created in many of the churches.
A similar dispute among the members of the Gospel Assembly Church in Kansas City was the foundation of the case of Dawkins v. Dawkins (40,956), 183 Kan. 323, 328 P.2d 346; and the companion case of Dawkins v. Dawkins (40,957), 183 Kan. 336, 328 P.2d 355. Another similarity exists between the case at bar and the Dawkins cases. It would appear that both in the case of minister Dawkins and minister Mullineaux, the Reverend Mr. Jolly was able to persuade Mrs. Dawkins and Mrs. Mullineaux to lead the dissenting group in each church against their own husbands, a fact which caused a divorce in each instance.
But this court cannot attempt to decide which church faction was following the doctrines laid down by Sowders, the founder of the church. It may be mentioned that the defendants did introduce a rather large number of ministers from other cities who testified they had broken with Jolly, as had minister Mullineaux.

Second Sergeant Corbin BOND

Sgt. Corbin BOND was 22 when he enlisted at Linn Creek on August 15, 1862. He mustered in at Benton Barracks on September 6, 1862 in Company D as a Private. He deserted from the steamer L. M. Kennett while going downriver from Arkansas Post to Young's Point, LA on January 19, 1863. He returned to the regiment on November 19. He was court martialed for the desertion on April 28, 1864 and found not guilty. He was wounded in action in his right shoulder at Kennesaw Mountain on June 15, 1864. He is listed as promoted to 2nd Sergeant on the muster roll of July/August, 1864. He left sick to the hospital at Marietta, GA on October 6. He was again listed as a deserter from February 29 to April 29, 1865. He mustered out with the regiment on June 12, 1865.

Maude Ozell Bond died on 12 July 1974 at Missouri at age 82 Mrs. Maud Ozell Tombs, 84, of Versailles, died at Bothwell Hospital in Sedalia on Friday, July 12. She was born in Morgan County on Nov. 12, 1889, the daughter of Corbin and Lucretia McMillian Bond. She was married to Ted Hibdon, who preceded her in death. Later she was married to Edward T. Tombs, who preceded her in death in 1967. She was also preceded in death by her parents and a daughter, Mrs. Addie Lou Hibdon. Surviving are three grandsons, Glen Hibdon, Laurie, Billy Jack Hibdon, San Diego, Calif. and Teddy Hibdon, Jacksonville, Fla. Six great-grandchildren; a sister Mrs. Velva Chinchell, and a half-brother, Willies Adams, both of Topeka, Kan. Mrs. Tombs was a member of the Baptist church. Funeral services were held at the Kidwell-Garber Funeral Home at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, the Rev. P H. Wilbanks officiating. Hymns were sung by Mrs. Joe Walters and Mrs. Donald Terry, with Mrs. Walter as organist. Pallbearers were Vencil Chipley, Joe Pace, Robert Hibdon, Joe Walters, Andrew Tombs and Donald Terry. Interment was in Holst Cemetery near Gravois Mills.
