Gerald J. Flynn was born in Akron, Iowa, on September 4, 1921. He was a joy to his parents, Frank and Selina Flynn. He had stepbrothers and sisters from his mother’s previous marriage. His half-siblings included Kenneth Flynn and Fay Nagle. His natural siblings were Sarah Flynn, Mildred Flynn, Morris Flynn, Francis Flynn and Ethel Flynn, from oldest to youngest. Gerald Flynn grew up in Elk Point where he later attended school at Elk Point High School. Gerald had many hobbies. He loved to go out with the guys, tease his sister by putting her dolls in trees, and playing pranks. Once his friends and he tipped the utility shed on their coach. Gerald hunted with his brother Francis, or as he called him Peck, and Chuck Bernard. While still in high school, he worked at the local REA. Gerald wanted to enter the military before he graduated, but his mother insisted that he graduate from high school. Flynn and his brother Morris graduated from Elk Point High School on May 19, 1942.

The day following their graduation, Flynn and Morris left for Des Moines, Iowa, to enlist in the Marines and from there were sent to San Diego, California, for training. After his training, Gerald Flynn was shipped to the South Pacific.

Mrs. Barry was born Aug. 5, 1927, in Akron, Iowa, the daughter of Francis Patrick and Salina Samantha (Bennett) Flynn. She attended Elk Point Public Schools. She was a life long Elk Point resident.


She married Thomas Barry on March 8, 1947, in Elk Point. and was employed as a custodian for Elk Point School. Mr. Barry died June 7, 2001.

She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Charleen (Scott) Dalton of Lombard, Ill; a brother, Francis Flynn of Elk Point; a granddaughter, Emily Dalton of Lombard, Ill; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers; and three sisters.

Broughton to Loretta (Mercer) and William Broughton April 10, 1932, in the Lone Rock. She later moved to Evansville, and attended Evansville High School. She first married Bill Lawton and they had two children, Debra and Dale Lawton. They divorced and she married Donald Milbrandt. Bertha worked many years at Advanced Transformers and for a while at Skaalen Nursing home. She loved to socialize at Pete's Inn, The Night Owl with her travel friend, Carrie Fiechter, enjoyed lunching and playing games with the Golden Diners at Creekside Place. She loved collecting John Wayne memorabilia and owl figurines. On one special birthday, dear friend “Blonde Dan” dressed as John Wayne and took her on a full afternoon excursion. In her earlier years she was quite the seamstress, making many dresses. Bertha is survived by her children: Debbie (Dave) Milbrandt of Evansville, and their children, David Jr. Dana Reinartz and Dori Milbrandt (fiancé Jesse Kuehl) of Sun Prairie; Dale Lawton of Missouri, and his son, Dale Jr. of Kewaunee; Peggy (Rich) Wayne of Janesville, and children, Robin Milbrandt, Richie Jr. and Bobbie Jo Wayne; Janet (Brian) Burns of Oregon, WI, and daughter, Brooke. Penny (Dan) Ambler of Evansville, and children, Jesse and Justin; step-daughter, Gloria (Chuck) Shain of Beloit, and children, Tammy Rodley, Tina Dobbs; Tim and Ted Ames and all of their children; great-grandchildren: Breanna, William and Rochelle Church, Dylan Reinartz, Madison Lawton, Ashley Wayne, Zachary Wayne and Violet Milbrandt; great great-granddaughter, Savanah Grace Cottrell. She is also survived by her siblings: Clifford (Carol) Broughton of CA, Catherine Lawton of Madison, Shirley Good of New Lisbon, Jim (Lynette) Broughton of Evansville; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Don in 1992; brother, Francis; grandson, Billy Lawton; and great-granddaughter, Marya Wayne-O'Dierno; the Church children's father, Bradley Church; good friend, Lois Peterson; and numerous brothers and sisters-in-law. We wish to thank Bertha's special friends, Linda and Bret Church, the staff at Nazareth Health and Rehab, Mercy Clinic-Evansville, Agrace HospiceCare for their care and compassion. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday Dec. 22, 2014, at WARD-HURTLEY FUNERAL HOME, Evansville, with Reverend Josh Brumbaugh of Oak Grove Church, Evansville, officiating. Burial will follow in Maple Hill Cemetery, Evansville. A visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of service on Monday at the FUNERAL HOME.
