Death17 September 2004Raymond Edward Hanks died on 17 September 2004 at Douglas, Oregon, at age 77 Hanks, Raymond E. "Ray" - Age 77 of Canyonville, Oregon passed away at his home on September 17, 2004. Ray was born in Wheatland, Wyoming on June 5, 1927. His family moved to California in 1932 where he attended school. After completing his senior year of high school, he joined the Merchant Marines. His ship was torpedoed twice in the South Pacific during World War II; he claimed that was where he learned to swim well. Following the war, he contracted cotton choppers in Fresno, owned a reweaving and cleaning business in Oakland, raised chinchillas, developed a ski resort in the Sierras and worked for Union Oil Company in Richmond as a tanker driver. He worked his way up the ladder at Union to become an oil compounder and chemist. Always wanting to be his own boss, he and a long time friend developed a mobile home resort on Lake Berryessa in California. After five years, he sold the resort and bought into a residential care facility. The complex expanded to three hospitals over a ten year period. He served on the convention committee of the California Nursing Home Review Committee and was active in numerous state initiatives for senior citizens. Ray enjoyed the outdoors, water and snow skiing, motor home travels and yachting. He is a past commander of the El Diablo Yacht Club. He was active in Rotary lnternation and received the Paul Harris Fellowship award for his outstanding service. Taking care of people came natural to this generous man. He has taken in and raised many children. Among those he has helped are now a teacher, an environmental supervisor, a city parks director, a building contractor and a mobile home park manager. In 1986 he moved up to Oregon when he purchased the Drifter Mobile Home Park in Canyonville. He has contributed to the Community as a member of the Canyonville City Council, president of the Community citizen's patrol and a strong advocate for senior citizens in the area. He was honored as citizen of the year in 1990. Visitation for family and friends will be at Mountain View Memorial Chapel at Myrtle Creek on Tuesday, September 21 from 2 PM until 6 PM, immediately followed by a celebration of life at his home. Remembrances may be made in Ray's memory to Mercy Hospice, 2700 NW Stewart Parkway, Roseburg, Oregon 97470.
