He graduated from the Zion Lutheran Parochial School and attended Ocheyedan High School. His confirmation verse was John 10:27-28. On December 27, 1941 Erwin joined the United States Navy and spent four years serving in the south Pacific and the Philippine Islands. He was honorably discharged on November 12, 1945.
He was united in marriage to Evelyn Glade of Ocheyedan, Iowa On September 21, 1947 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Horton Township. They lived in Ocheyedan where Erwin was a fuel oil deliverer for Home Oil Company from 1949 to 1981 and then with Coop Oil Company until he retired in 1984. He continued to work part-time for the Coop until 1995. In July of 1999 he moved to the Country View Manor in Sibley, Iowa.
Erwin was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church of Ocheyedan.
He passed away on Monday, September 27, 1999 at the Osceola Community Hospital in Sibley, Iowa at the age of 81 years, 3 months and 6 days.
Those left to cherish his memories are his wife Evelyn, two daughters and sons-in-law: Ginny and Victor Milas of Hanover Park, Illinois, Nancy and Ronald Boeke of Pipestone, Minnesota; one son and daughter-in-law: Kevin and Michelle Claus of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; nine grandchildren; two brothers and sisters-in-law: Marvin and Marjorie Claus of Ocheyedan, Iowa, Donald and Alta Mae Claus of Spencer, Iowa; many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one infant brother: Harold; one sister; Phyllis Dilly.
