She attended schools in Reedsburg and in LaCrosse, and became a teacher. Virginia taught in a one-room schoolhouse during World War II. She also worked at a restaurant in Milwaukee with a cousin. On November 8, 1944 she married Chester W. "Bud" Powell. They moved to Reedsburg in 1961 and remained there. She was a member of the Reedsburg United Methodist Church. She also volunteered at the Reedsburg Hospital Gift Shop. Virginia worked as a nurse's assistant starting in 1961 at the Sauk County Health Care Center, the Baraboo Manor and Snyder Nursing Home. She retired on July 31, 1987. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Chester; son, Kenny; sister, Dorothy; and brother-in-law, Keith. She is survived by her daughter, Debra Powell of Reedsburg Sister, Florence Breneman of Reedsburg brother and sisters-in-law; nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services for Virginia Powell will be conducted at 1:00 P.M., Thursday, July 22, 2010 at the United Methodist Church in Reedsburg with Pastor David Farina officiating. Burial will be made in the Sandusky Cemetery. Friends may call on Thursday from 11:00 A.M. until the time of the service at the church. The Farber Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Burial will following in St. Anthony’s Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 4-8 P.M. at the Cazenovia Chapel with a rosary prayed at 8 P.M. and again on Wednesday from 9:30 – 10:30 A.M. at the Cazenovia Chapel. Memorial masses of remembrance may be made to St. Anthony’s Catholic Church. The Farber Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements.

He was born in Prairie Farm on June 11, 1913, the son of Reverend Gustav and Emma (Klozinski) Vater. Vic graduated from North Freedom High School and attended radio servicing schools at various times. He was joined in marriage with Bertha Krueger on May 29, 1942. Vic served for four years in the Army Signal Corps. He was a partner in Reedsburg Quality Hardware from 1940 until 1963 when he began a career as a radio dispatcher with the Wisconsin State Patrol. Vic transferred from the State Patrol to Emergency Government retiring in 1979. He was a ham radio operator for over 65 years; his call letters were W9JHP. Vic was a licensed pilot, and was an officer of the Civil Air Patrol Squadron in Reedsburg. He enjoyed playing cards with his family. Vic was a member of Grace Lutheran Church. He is survived by his wife, Bertha; a son, John (Susan) Vater; a daughter, Barb (LeRoy) Berlin; two grandsons, Jason and Scott Vater; a sister, Mabel Brandt of Sparta; a brother, Gerhard Vater of Baraboo; brothers-in-law, Milton Krueger and William (Doris) Krueger; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, Gerald Vater; three brothers, Louis, Christian and Louther Vater; and a sister, Gertrude Hill. A one hour memorial visitation was held on Saturday, May 22, 1999 at Grace Lutheran Church, I South Rosa Road from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. with the memorial service at 11:00 a.m. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery, North Freedom. Memorials may be made to Grace Lutheran Church or the charity of the donor's choice.
The Fitch Lawrence Sanfillippo Cress Funeral and Cremation Service assisted the family with the arrangements.
