A funeral mass for Betty and her husband, Eldon, will be celebrated at St. Andrew Catholic Church, Tennyson, on Saturday, December 10, 2022 at 11:00 a.m., with visitation from 9:00 a.m. until time of service. Burial will be at St. Andrew’s Catholic Cemetery. The Melby Funeral Home & Crematory, Platteville, is serving the family. Betty was born August 8, 1930 in Plain, Wisconsin, to Harold and Bernadette (Klar) Blindert. She married her high school sweetheart, Eldon Pluemer on May 23, 1950 at St. Andrew Catholic Church, Tennyson. In May 2021 they celebrated 71 years of marriage. Eldon and Betty raised eight children: Gail (Chuck) Steiner, Pam (Mark) Walsh, Anjie (Troy) Newell, Becky (Jim Hutchins), David, Brian (Stacey), Jerarda/Jody (Mark) Bartels, and Jill (Dave) Lynn. Betty graduated from the former St. Andrew Catholic School in 1948. During high school, Betty worked at the Walsh Store, Tennyson. Following her graduation, Betty worked at the Dubuque Packing Company until starting her family. Betty was a homemaker, taking care of the children while Eldon worked at John Deere. Betty later waitressed at the Dugout Supper Club, Dickeyville, and tended bar at various local taverns. Betty also surprised her children after school one day by announcing, “Ding dong, Avon calling” when she started her Avon business, which she ran for many years. Mom was first and foremost, a wife and mother, always putting the family first, as evidenced by always taking the burnt toast, cooking what she despised such as venison, rabbit, squirrel, and the dreaded liver and onions that Dad liked so much. She was rarely in the foreground, always supporting from the background.She put the dogs out of their misery when Dad wouldn’t or couldn’t, she kept Dad and her brothers in line when they got in trouble, which, by the photos, was often and not an easy task. She had a fun side, such as spinning donuts in the school parking lot when taking players home after basketball practice, or gunning the snowmobile to give us an extra thrill. Betty, Eldon and the family camped often at the Grant River Park in Potosi, and they also loaded the family of eight children in the station wagon for a summer vacation to South Dakota. They were among the first members of the local Mississippi Bluff Riders Snowmobile Club. Eldon and Betty were avid card players and square dancers. They enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing, snowmobile riding, and boating. She was a Cub Scout leader. She taught the children, grandchildren, and even recently some of the great-grandchildren to play cards. When questioned about teaching the grandchildren to play dice games, Betty remarked, “I’m teaching them to count.” Eldon and Betty volunteered countless hours at the Tennyson Ball Diamond, helping prepare the field and with concessions. Eldon and Betty also volunteered at many church and school events. For many years, Eldon and Betty traveled to the John Deere Village in central Florida, spending several weeks of the winter in the Florida sunshine, rather than Wisconsin’s cold and snow. After the JD Village closed, they purchased their own home at Sun Lake Retirement Village in Grand Island, Florida, where they spent approximately six months each year in their home on the Sun Lake Golf Course, enjoying time golfing, playing shuffleboard, biking, and playing cards with friends from all over the country. Betty was a devoted member of St. Andrew-Thomas Catholic Parish. While Betty did not necessarily share Eldon’s love of the Green Bay Packers, she was an avid Milwaukee Brewers fan. Betty is also survived by 17 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, sister, Ann Klein, and brothers, Carl, Harry and Doug (Pat) Blindert, sisters-in-law Jan Duve and Jackie Blindert, and many nieces and nephews. Betty was preceded in death by her husband Eldon, infant daughters, JeanAnn and Peggy, her parents, parents-in-law, Alphonse and Angela Pluemer, step-father Herbert (Duckey) Besler, step-mother-in-law Mae Pluemer, brother Bernard, brothers and sisters-in-law Arnold and Ruth Blindert, Vernon and Carol Blindert, JoAnn and Bob Smith, sister and brother-in-law Lucy and Harold Faherty, brothers-in-law Al Duve and Francis Klein, brother- and sister-in-law George and Marie Pluemer, and sisters-in-law Priscilla, Dorothea and Shirley Blindert. |

As their family grew, the Pluemers made weekly Sunday afternoon drives a tradition. Eldon Pluemer was a year ahead of Betty Blindert at St. Andrew’s School in Tennyson. The two began dating after Betty’s 16th birthday when Eldon brought her home from her birthday party at the rock quarry. Several years later, when Betty was 19 and Eldon was 20, the two got married. “We were just taking a ride on a Sunday afternoon and he said, ‘Why don’t we get married?’” Betty recalls. The Potosi couple married on May 23, 1950, a rainy Tuesday, at St. Andrew Catholic Church. Betty’s satin wedding dress was later worn by several of the couple’s daughters and daughters-in-law at their own weddings. Over the course of 11 years, Betty and Eldon had 10 children. Two died shortly after birth. Their living children, Gail Steiner, Pam Walsh, Anjie Newell, Becky Hutchins, David Pluemer, Brian Pluemer, Jody Bartels and Jill Lynn, have given Betty and Eldon 16 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. Faith is important for both Betty and Eldon. They included references to St. Gerard Majella in many of their children’s middle names. Eldon was a machinist at John Deere for 40 years. On two occasions, Eldon made suggestions that increased efficiency at John Deere, increasing profits. Eldon was awarded $18,000 for the first idea. His second idea earned him $10,000, Steiner said. “I always see my dad as an inventor,” Steiner said. “He can always figure things out.” Betty, who briefly worked at Dubuque Packing Co., raised the children. When the children were older, she was a waitress and bartender. Betty volunteered at Ss. Andrew- Thomas School, worked concession stands at softball games and led Cub Scouts. As the Pluemer children remember it, their parents always found ways to have fun, with frequent card games, dances and fishing and hunting trips. “As soon as (Gail) got home from kindergarten, we went down fishing,” Betty said, explaining how Eldon would help remove the fish hooks. The couple whirled through square dances in matching outfits Betty made herself. Every Sunday, the family went on an afternoon ride. The couple has reels of home movies that they would rewatch as a family with popcorn. Eldon and Betty built a life-size, handmade nativity set in the early 1960s out of plywood and heavy paper. The same scene still decorates the Pluemer yard each Christmas. For decades, many of the Pluemer children believed their parents had honeymooned at Niagara Falls. One of the children had seen a photo of Betty by a waterfall and shared their assumption with the rest of their siblings. Betty and Eldon had no idea. The story was shared at their 65th anniversary in 2015, when the couple revealed to their stunned children that they had never been to Niagara Falls. The photo with the waterfall, which had loomed large in the children’s mind, had actually been taken at a stream near Tennyson, Wis. After learning the truth, Steiner took Betty and Eldon on a trip see the real Niagara Falls. Steiner and Lynn both say they never heard their parents argue. “I remember when he got home from work, mom was waiting at the door right by the stove and they would hug and kiss when he came in the door first thing,” Steiner said. Lynn said that sharing hugs and kisses was also the last thing her parents would do before leaving for the day. “In fact, I had a friend over one time and they came home and dad did the kiss and she came to me later and she said, ‘Your parents kiss? | Death | 15 August 2009 | Virginia Ann Kerkenbush died on 15 August 2009 at age 86 Virginia Ann "Ginny" Droessler, 86, of Kieler, went home to her heavenly Father at 6:50 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, 2009, at Southwest Health Center Nursing Home, Cuba City, surrounded by her family. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 19, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Kieler, with the Rev. Bernard Rott officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 1 to 7 p.m. today at the church, where there will be a rosary/scripture service at 1 p.m. Friends also may call from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. Wednesday at the church. The Miller Funeral Home, East Dubuque, Ill., is in charge of arrangements. She was born on Nov. 23, 1922, in Tennyson, daughter of William "Bill" and Adeline (Meoska) Kerkenbush. She married the love of her life, Virgil "Jim" Droessler, on Nov. 25, 1941, at St. Thomas Catholic Church, Potosi; our father, Jim, preceded her in death on Sept. 29, 2005. They were married for 631/2 years. As their children, we always knew the love they had for each other. That was a wonderful way to be brought up. Ginny was a very hardworking farm wife and still always found time to take care of Dad's plastering business accounts. She was a wonderful and loving mother to her eight children, and a precious, gentle mother-in-law, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a special sister to her brothers, sisters, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law and her many friends. She always had gentle words and a gentle way of helping any of us when we needed anything and never said an unkind word about anyone. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Parish Ladies Sodality. Her faith and love for Jesus brought her through many obstacles in her life. She instilled the faith of God in all of us, which we will carry with us throughout our lives and her grandchildren's lives. She loved her children and in-laws and always said they were perfect. She adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and loved when she could spend time with them. She always said each one of them was her favorite and always was throwing holy water their way to protect them. Ginny had a very special bond with her brothers and sisters, taking yearly vacations to Michigan and up north. No matter where they went, she was so happy just to be together with them. Her children were very fortunate to be able to spend time with them on those special vacations. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. She was the center of our family circle and will remain in the center of our family because she will be in our hearts forever. Surviving are her children, Judy (Bob) Kaiser, Richard "Dick" (Barb) Droessler and Sandy (Roger) Hughes, all of Cuba City, Larry (Susan) Droessler and Steve (Penny) Droessler, both of Platteville, Kay (Greg) Runde and Kelly (John) Jansen, both of Cuba City; 25 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; sisters, Betty Lindecker and Marie (Fens) Capesius, both of Dubuque; and brothers, Alfred (Erma) Kerkenbush, of Dubuque, and Roger (Frankie) Kerkenbush, of Monroe, Mich. She was preceded in death by a son, Gary Lee Droessler, in 1947; a granddaughter, Courtney Ann Runde, in 1999; a great-grandson, Tanner Joseph Hughes, in 2004; her parents; a sister, Eileen Droeszler; a brother, Jerry Kerkenbush; brothers-in-law, Calvin Lindecker, Harlan Droeszler, Paul Capesius, Harold, Leon, Ray, Joe and Jerry Droessler; and sisters-in-law, Mary, Helena, Louise, Luetta, Beverly and Rita Droessler. |

Erma attended St. Joseph's Academy. She married Alfred J. Kerkenbush on June 18, 1947, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Dubuque. Erma was a devoted, wife, mother and homemaker. She was an active mother who "played with" her children. She also was everyone's chauffeur. Erma was a member of St. Columbkille's Parish and its Mother's Club. She enjoyed bowling and her Bridge and card clubs. Her greatest joy was to be with her family. Survivors: her beloved husband, Alfred J. Kerkenbush, of Dubuque; six daughters, Shirley A. (John) Copeland, of Sumter, South Carolina, Patricia J. "Patti Jo" Hodge, of Fairlawn, Ohio, Denise M. (David) Parochetti, of Bettendorf, Iowa, Donna M. To honor Betty's life, funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 13, 2015, at Holy Spirit Parish, Holy Ghost Church, 2921 Central Ave., with Rev. Kyle M. Digmann officiating. He preceded her in death on October 25, 1986. She was employed at the Dubuque Packing Company for 28 years and at Mt. Carmel for 26 years until her retirement in 2014. In her free time, Betty enjoyed traveling, loved taking care of her home, flower gardening, cooking, baking and watching her grandchildren. Family was very important to Betty and she will be truly missed by all who knew and loved her. Betty is survived by her children, Michael (Sue) Lindecker, Rhonda (Scott) Hillery, and Carla (Jerry) Lanser, all of Dubuque; 10 grandchildren, Craig Lindecker, Terry (Sara) Lindecker, Jake (Mandy) Lindecker, Willie (Carrie Smith) Parker, Chad (Kim Sutter) Parker, Calee (Jason Robey) Parker, Cody (Kendra Hartley) Hillery, Colton Hillery, Jason (Brianna Hurst) Lanser and Justin Lanser; 9 great-grandchildren, Dakota, Ally, Calvin and Waylon Lindecker, Maddy and Evelyn Parker, Elizabeth and Mya Robey, Mason Hillery; her siblings, Alfred Kerkenbush, Marie Capesius, both of Dubuque, Roger (Frankie) Kerkenbush, Monroe, MI; a son-in-law, William "Bill" Parker II, Dubuque, IA; sister-in-law and best friend, Rose Girot, East Dubuque, IL.
