Dirk was born on October 20, 1949, in Richland Center, the son of John and Verlynn (Pokorney) Kooiman. He graduated from Richland Center High School in 1967. Dirk received a Marketing degree from Madison Area Technical College in 1969 and a Business Administration degree from University of Platteville in 1976. Dirk worked in Richland Center at Richland Center Federal Savings and Loan Association from 1977 until 1988, Anchor Bank from 1988 until 1996, and Westby Co-op Credit Union from 1996 until present day. Dirk was a lifelong Richland County Resident and was a member of a Local History Club. He was a cat and dog lover and was a member of the Ocooch Mountain Humane Society.

Dirk is survived by three brothers: Daniel Kooiman, Mark Kooiman, Michael Kooiman; sister: Kathryn Kooiman Ortez; many other relatives and friends.

Dirk is preceded in death by his parents and nephew Derek Kooiman.

Private services will be held at a later date. The Pratt Funeral and Cremation Service is assisting the family with their arrangements.
