Death29 February 2016Lorraine Catherine Shaffer died on 29 February 2016 at Dubuque, Dubuque, Iowa, at age 80 Lorraine C. Dimitroff, age 80, of Dubuque, IA, was called home peacefully at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, February 29, 2016, at home with her three loving sons by her side. To honor Lorraine's life, funeral services will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, March 4, 2016, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street, with Phil Smith officiating. To celebrate Lorraine's life, family and friends may visit from 4:00 p.m. until the time of services at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, March 4, 2016, at Behr Funeral Home. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

Lorraine was born on October 12, 1935, in Dubuque, daughter of William and Edna (Maas) Shaffer. She was one of 14 brothers and sisters and graduated from St. Columbkille High School in 1953. She was a great student, even earning the American Legion School Award entitled the Certificate of Distinguished Achievement which also recognized her "possession of those high qualities of Honor, Courage, Scholarship, Leadership and Service". During her Columbkille days she went to live with her aunt and uncle, John and Helen Maas, who owned the original Bel-Du Inn which today is known as Happy's. While working there she acquired the name Sweet Lorraine because of her kind and easy going personality. She also first met her future husband, Eldon Dimitroff, there and they were married on Nov. 30, 1957. On her first anniversary, she gave birth to their first son, John. Mark, David and Daniel would follow.

She worked part time at Clark Transfer and Storage Company for many years. She was very active at Holy Ghost Parish regularly volunteering in the library. She was in Mother's Club and the Rosary Society, often handling all of the paperwork. Being good with numbers, she was the defacto family tax specialist for her parents and many of her brothers and sisters. She loved singing in the church choir and her voice was beautiful and very distinctive as we could always make it out from the pew. She did bowling league for many years and traveled to out of town tournaments in Kansas City and Indianapolis. One of her favorite things was to play Yahtzee with her family. No one yelled "Yahtzee" like Lorraine. She loved watching her boys play sports attending all of the games with Eldon. Her two favorite things to have were Marco's Pizza and Coca-Cola. Her smile would absolutely light up the room.

But in 1996 she was diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia and she fought that disease for the next 20 years. We can only say that during that time she showed such courage and strength that we will forever cherish the time we were able to spend with her. Her love came out to us daily and we have felt for a long time that she was really caring for us. She was a beautiful, beautiful person and we will miss her dearly.

Those left to cherish Lorraine's memory include

her sons,
John Dimitroff,
David Dimitroff
and Daniel Dimitroff, all of Dubuque;

and her siblings,
Shirley Mihalakis,
Richard "Dick" (Patricia) Shaffer,
Clarence Shaffer,
James "Jimmy" (Rose) Shaffer
Harold (Sue) Shaffer, all of Dubuque, IA
