Scovel Harris Johnson

M, b. 29 May 1877, d. 22 November 1944
Life EventDateDescription
MarriageScovel Harris Johnson married Bessie Smith, daughter of George Washington Smith and Helen Celina Thompson.
Birth29 May 1877Scovel Harris Johnson was born on 29 May 1877 at Washington, District of Columbia.
Death22 November 1944He died on 22 November 1944 at Yankton, South Dakota, at age 67 Funeral services were held the past week for Scovel Johnson, 67, correspondence school engineer who did the "impossible" in construction of the famous Needles highway of South Dakota's Black Hills. Traveling by horseback and on foot Johnson made preliminary surveys and located the road after four engineers had said that it couldn't be done. The road was completed in 1922, with Johnson in charge of finances and engineering. Johnson also engineered the Sylvan lake and Custer State park roads, and made surveys for the Iron mountain and Sheep mountain roads, although his surveys were not completely followed during construction. His education had been less than the eighth grade. Johnson came to the Hills in 1900, after having participated in the Alaska gold rush in 1898, to work for an uncle in a mica mine. He was also a photographer for a time before taking up the study of civil engineering by correspondence In 1908 he entered the U. S. forest service and conducted many classifications and mineral surveys in the Hills. He was deputy state surveyor, 1909-10, then had charge of a Montana road survey, and in 1914 returned to the state to work for the forest service. Worked Under Norbeck His adventurous feet then took him' to Alaska for a second time, and when he returned in 1919 took a job with the highway commission. Peter Norbeck was governor at that time, and was interested in the Needles road which came to fulfillment under Johnson's daring enterprise and vision. Johnson's career became further varied when he decided to study law, and in 1927 he was admitted to the bar. He was elected Custer county state's attorney in 1930, 1932, and 1938, was city attorney for a number of years, and had an active civil practice. At the time of his death he was president of the Custer county bar association, attorney for the C. B. & Q. railroad, and a civil engineer with licenses to practice in South Dakota, Wyoming and Colorado. Surviving are his widow, two daughters, and a stepson.
