Death9 January 2010Herbert Elmer Fickbohm died on 9 January 2010 at age 95 Herbert Elmer Fickbohm, 95, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 9, 2010 at Sanford Vermillion Hospital after a brief illness. Herbert was born on Oct. 13, 1914 in Montevideo, MN to Walter and Mary Fickbohm. When he was young he helped build Highway 77 from the Garryowen Community near rural Elk Point all the way to Beresford. He was married to Violet Virgie Offerdahl on Aug. 23, 1937. They farmed until moving to Vermillion in 1946, where they still lived. Herbert was a hard working man whose first job was with the Southern Pacific Railroad. He also worked for the lumber yard in Vermillion before finding his occupation as a bookkeeper at the REA where he worked until his retirement in 1979. Herbert and Violet loved to bowl and play cards with the family. They also enjoyed volunteering and were named Volunteers of the Year at the Vermillion Nursing Home. He was a quiet and private man who loved to fish and vegetable garden and play horseshoes. He was a member of Cornerstone Assembly of God. Survivors include his wife, Violet Fickbohm of Vermillion; son, Herbert V. Fickbohm of Vermillion; daughter, Sallyann Mettler of Stevensville, MI; eight grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; sister, Ethel Anderson of Alcester; and sister-in-law, Agnes Fickbohm of Centerville. Herbert is preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Mary Fickbohm; brothers, Alvin, Walter and Vern Fickbohm; half-brother, Alfred Carlson; and sister, Pearl Anderson. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 14, 2010, at Cornerstone Assembly of God in Vermillion, with Rev. Devon Davoux officiating. Visitation was held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2010 at Iverson-Siecke-Kober Funeral Home in Vermillion.

Luverne R. Fickbohm of Beresford was called home on Friday, Nov. 7, 2003, at Bethesda Nursing Home in Beresford at the age of 84 years.

Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Roseni Lutheran Church in rural Beresford. Burial will be in the Roseni church cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Wass Funeral Home in Beresford.

Luverne was born Aug. 11, 1919, on the family homestead in Union County to Walter and Mary (Kiewel) Fickbohm. He attended Garryowen School and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1945 as an airplane mechanic during World War II.


He married Klara Kraakmo on Jan. 7, 1946, at the Roseni parsonage. The couple farmed in the Alcester and Spink, S.D., area until their retirement in 1983, when they moved into Beresford. Following Klara's death in September 2000, Luverne continued to reside in Beresford.

He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and was a longtime member of Roseni Lutheran Church, serving as Sunday school teacher and on numerous boards within the church.

Grateful for having shared his life are his son, Kenneth and his wife, Judy of Harrisburg, S.D; a daughter, Mary and her husband, Mark Munger of St. Paul, Minn; three grandchildren, Jon Lundgren of Elgin, Neb., and Aaron and Amanda Fickbohm of Harrisburg; a great-grandson, Christian Lundgren; a sister, Ethel Anderson; a brother, Herbert Fickbohm; and many other relatives and friends.

In addition to his wife, Klara, he was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Linda; three brothers, Alfred, Alvin and Walter; and a sister, Pearl.
