Clarence grew up on the family farm and moved for the first time to the city of Beresford and the age of 60. He attended Silver Lake School #59 in Lincoln County for eight years. As a child and young adult he was a member of Zion Evangelical United Brethren church northeast of Beresford. He worked on the farm and also for the telephone company. He married Mildred Jeanette Sommervold on February 20, 1949. The couple became members of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Beresford following their wedding. The couple lived on the Zweifel farm northeast of Beresford where they farmed with Clarences brother Albert. Clarence enjoyed his family, bowling, cars, gardening with his wife, and remained interested in farming even after his retirement. He is survived by four children: Darlene Zweifel, John (Valerie) Zweifel, David (Linda Kay) Zweifel, and Royal (Kay) Zweifel all of Beresford; eight grandchildren: Heather Zweifel and Danelle (Tom) Kamnikar, Sioux Falls, Janelle Zweifel, Murfreesboro, TN, Gregory (Candace) Zweifel, Beresford, Mark (Shana) Zweifel, Harrisburg, and Lori (Anthony) Laurvik, Luke Zweifel, and Lisa Zweifel all of Beresford; four great grandchildren: Austin Zweifel, Murfreesboro, TN, Maggie and Lily Kamnikar, Sioux Falls and Zachary Zweifel, Harrisburg; two sisters: Iona Carlson, Sioux Falls and Lorene (Freeman) Swanstrom, Beresford; three sisters-in-law: Laura Zweifel and Martha Jamtgaard of Beresford and Esther Zweifel of Alcester; two brothers-in-law: Morris Sommervold of Alcester and Bruce Nilson of Fergus Falls, MN; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Darlene made a special request to her friends and family to dress comfortably for her services, (jeans, etc.) so that you can focus on the message you will be hearing. This is going to be a celebration of her life! Memorials may be directed to Emmanuel Lutheran Church.

Darlene M. Zweifel was born January 30, 1951 in Sioux Falls, SD to Clarence and Mildred (Sommervold) Zweifel. She grew up on her families’ 2nd generation farm near Beresford, SD. She attended grade school at Silver Lake School, District 59, which was a one-room country school that her grandmother and her siblings attended as well as her father and his siblings. She graduated from Beresford High School in 1969.

Darlene attended technical School of Licensed Practical Nursing where she received her degree in Practical Nursing. She worked at both Sioux Valley Hospital and McKennan Hospitals in Sioux Falls, SD. She was secretary then president of the SD Licensed Practical Nurses Association. During her time in office, many old nursing practices were updated to current standards. Darlene then moved to Alcester where she worked at Morningside Manor. She took some time off from the nursing profession and worked at Alkota Manufacturing in shipping and receiving. She moved to Arizona for the next 27 years where she worked in a variety of areas at Phoenix Baptist Hospital and Arrowhead Community Hospital.

In 2006, Darlene returned to Beresford to spend time with her parents and family. Despite many health issues, she didn’t consider slowing down. She enjoyed spending time with her dear friends and family. She enjoyed quiet times with her sewing, counted cross-stitch and Janet Evanovich books. She also loved to watch the Hallmark Channel, NCIS, and Murder She Wrote episodes.

Darlene is survived by her three brothers, John (Valerie) Zweifel, David (Linda) Zweifel and Royal (Kay) Zweifel, all of Beresford, SD; her goddaughter, Janelle (Jeff Crislip) Zweifel, New Baden, IL; her beloved nieces and nephews, Danelle (Tom) Kamnikar, Sioux Falls, SD, Mark Zweifel, Brandon, SD, Heather Zweifel, Sioux Falls, SD, Gregory (Candace) Zweifel, Beresford, SD, Lori (Jacob Jensen) Laurvick, Beresford, SD, Luke (Marisa) Zweifel, Milford, IA and Lisa (Collin Phillips) Zweifel, New Ulm, MN; great-nieces and great-nephews, Austin Zweifel, Maggie and Lily Kamnikar, Zachary Zweifel, Garrison and Hugh Zweifel, Rylie Laurvick and Payton Zweifel; aunt, Lorene (Freeman) Swanstrom; uncle Bruce (Gloria) Nilson; and dear friends, Joanne Christiansen, LaDell Olson-Sletto, Ronni Swan and Michael Campbell.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Mildred; her grandparents; numerous aunts, uncles, relatives and dear friends.
  • In 1991 Darlene is a Licensed Partical Nurse (LPN) working on the Behavioral Health Unit of the Phoenix Baptist Hospital. She is also a part time student at the Arizona State University working on a business degree with emphasis on Accounting. This has been a long-term effort on her part to carry a fulltime job and a student load.
