  • Mentioned in Andrew Bear profile from A Genealogy of the Bear Family and biographical record of the descendants of Jacob Bear 1747-1906.
  • Angeline Bear, the eldest child of Andrew and Elizabeth (Keifer) Bear, was born at Lexington, Ohio, Aug. 4, 1839. Her marriage occurred at Spring Green, Wis., Aug. 14, 1856, Rev. George G. Nickey, Presiding Elder of the United Brethren Church, officiating, to Silas Coe Davis, who was born near Wayne, Ohio, Oct. 12. 1836, and is the son of Samuel and Eunice (Coe) Davis. Seven children were born to them.
    ...
Angeline Bear's father came to Wisconsin when she was a very small girl, and she grew to young womanhood near Spring Green, Sauk county, that State. After her marriage to Mr. Davis they lived first near Ithaca, Wis., but in 1859 they removed to Kansas, where they lived until the outbreak of the Civil War. They then returned to Wisconsin and Mr. Davis enlisted in the army, becoming a member of the Sixth Wisconsin Battery. He participated in the battle of Corinth, and while his detachment was in pursuit of Price, they halted one night in a corn field. The next morning Mr. Davis awoke to find himself in about six inches of water and unable to move. He was sent to the hospital at Memphis, Tenn., and after being there for a long time was sent home to die, but in about a year's time he recovered, although he had been very near death's door. There came another call for volunteers and Mr. Davis, with true loyal spirit, again enlisted and served to the end of the war. During the time of his service in the army his family lived at Spring Green, Wis., but on his return from his second enlistment they returned to Ithaca, Wis., and there resided for 19 years. They then sold their property and removed to White Rock township. Lane county, Kans. Here they took up a homestead and lived on same until they had proved their claim and received a deed from the Government. They then took up a tree claim and proved that up, and then every year or so would buy another quarter section of land until they eventually owned twelve quarters or three sections. They continued to devote their time and attention to agricultural pursuits for several years, but in recent years, however, as their children have all set- tled in homes of their own, and as they had more land than they could conveniently oversee and manage in their declining years, they have disposed of all but five quarters. This remaining land they have rented out, and they now have retired from the busy life they have led for so many years, and are living with their son William, near Wichita, Kans., enjoying the comforts afforded them by a substantial and well-earned income. Mr. and Mrs. Davis are both members of the Christian Church, Mr. Davis being also a member of the I. O. O. F.

  • Esther Ann Bear, the second child of Andrew and Elizabeth (Keifer) Bear, was born at Lexington, Ohio, Oct. 4, 1840. She was but a little girl when her parents removed to Sauk county, Wis. Her marriage occurred at Spring Green, Wis., Dec. 10, 1857, her kinsman. Rev. Simon S. Spyker, of the Congregational Church, officiating, to Henry Thomas Grinnell, who was bom at Chautauqua, N. Y., Sept. 19, 1833, was the son of Thomas and Ora (Carr) Grinnell. Six children were born to their union.
    ...
For three years after their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Grin- nell lived on a farm, or up to the commencement of the Civil War. Mr. Grinnell then answered the call and enlisted in the 6th Wisconsin Battery, serving one year. He then enlisted in company F, of the 34th Ill. Vol. Inf., and participated in the famous "March to the Sea." At Kennesaw Mountain he was wounded, being shot through the ankle, and for which he was finally discharged in March, 1865. After his return from the army, and as soon as he was sufficiently recovered from his wound, he engaged in the livery business at Grand Detour, Ill., running, in connection, a stage to and from Dixon, Ill. In this business he remained for several years and then went back to farming. About a year before his death, which occurred May 21. 1879, he removed to Thompson, Ill., at which place he was buried. Mrs. Grinnell then returned to Spring Green, Wis., where she still lives, in company with her daughter, Mattie Elizabeth. They own a very comfortable home which is beautified by a flower garden and conservatory. Mr. Grinnell, up to the time of his death, was a member of the Christian Church. His father was a "free will" Baptist minister and lived to the remarkable age of 93. Esther Ann (Bear) Grinnell is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, having united in 1880.
