Birth12 July 1949Warren Gerald Buum was born on 12 July 1949.
He was the son of Merlin Oliver Buum.
Death21 January 2005Warren Gerald Buum died on 21 January 2005 at age 55 Warren Gerald "Jerry" Buum, age 55, of Olivet passed away unexpectedly of an apparent heart attack, Friday, Jan. 21, 2005. at the Landmann-Jungman Memorial Hospital, Scotland, S.D. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2005, at the Olivet United Methodist Church, Olivet, S.D. with Rev. Mary-LeeLint officiating. Burial will be in the Wittenberg Cemetery, rural Olivet, S.D. Visitations will be 3 to 9 p.m., Monday, at the Aisenbrey-Kostel Funeral Home, Menno, S.D., and will resume one hour prior to the service at the church. Pallbearers will be Oliver, Dacotah and Comet Buum, Craig Ulmer, Arnie Bellack, and Scott Bellack. Jerry was born July 12, 1949, at Pickstown, S.D. to Merlin and Betty (Sattler) Buum. He spent his childhood in Pickstown, S.D. before moving to Tripp, S.D. with his family for a short time. He then moved to Aberdeen where he graduated in 1967. In 1972 he met his future wife, Vicki, and in 1973 they married. Life's experiences are what thrilled him. They traveled the first five years of their marriage, selling his creative works wherever they stopped. They lived in many places, from the Florida Keys to northern California. But they always came home to his beloved South Dakota and the family farm near Avon, S.D. They would spend summers there and then head off to a new adventure. Jerry attended four universities, graduating from USD in Fine Arts. Art was his passion, his life style, his being. In 1984, with their 4 children, they sold their house and belongings and bought one way tickets to Molokai, Hawaii where he cleared the rain forest and hand-made a home for his growing family. He was Molokai's resident artist for 11 years. He did many Artist in the School programs and worked closely with the Hawaiian Sovereignty movement. He loved Hawaii and truly had an "Aloha" heart. Three more children were born in Hawaii to complete his family. Jerry was a native Alaskan of the Tlingit tribe. Many of his works were of native influence and he was proud of his heritage. He served as curator of the largest Native American artifact exhibit in the state at Freeman Heritage Museum. A project very dear to his heart. In 1993 he returned to his roots in S.D. His life's journey can be traced by following the artwork he left behind. He never wanted to be famous; he just wanted his art to be enjoyed. He was loved by many and a "brother" to all. He was affectionately and simply called "Jer" by his children and was their best friend. His strong faith and love was a blessing to all that knew him. He always said, "An artist is as good as what they have experienced," and his life was truly wonderful. He is survived by his wife, Vicki; children Micah Zuriel (Uilani Naipo Buum), Oliver August (Candace Young, Korben Charles Buum, Olivia Mae Young), Ivy Betty (Buum) Ulmer (Craig), Tryen Craig, Dacotah Cliff, Comet Kamalo, Blossom Helelu and Forest Onipa'a; his mother, Betty (Buum) Jeannoutot (Jim); a sister, Sherry (Buum) Bellack, (Arnie). He was preceded in death by his father, Merlin Oliver Buum, and grandparents, Bertha and August Sattler.
