Death12 August 2010Herbert E. Dargel died on 12 August 2010 at age 86 Herbert E. Dargel, 86, went from this life to the next Thursday, Aug. 12, 2010, as the result of injuries sustained in an accident with his Model A car on July 25. He had been cared for by wonderful ICU staff at Aspirus Hospital in Wausau, near the site of the accident. Ruth, his wife of 64 years, passed away one week earlier from injuries she received in the same accident. Herb was born in Sauk County on Jan. 30, 1924, to Herman and Bessie Alford Dargel. He attended St. Peter's Lutheran School in Reedsburg for eight years and then worked on the family farm and later in the construction of Badger Army Ammunition Plant near Baraboo. He was drafted into the U.S. Marine Corps and honorably served in the motor pool until being discharged in 1946. While serving in the military, he married Wilma (Ruth) Wegner on Jan. 27, 1946, in Washington, D.C. They moved to Flint, Mich., then later to Lime Ridge, where Herb opened a Massey-Harris dealership. He operated that until merging with Baraboo Implement, where he and partner John Hehenberger received an award for selling the most balers worldwide in one year. He was partner there until his retirement in 1987. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in LaValle since moving to Lime Ridge and was also a past member of the Lime Ridge village board. His many interests included ham radio operator, television repair, fishing, playing cards and after retirement became an enthusiastic antique car restorer. He rebuilt Model T's and A's for himself and others. Many people called on him for his expert mechanical skills. If he couldn't acquire a part, he'd make it on one of his metal lathes. Many enjoyable hours were spent in meetings, car shows and road trips with the Model A Restorers Club that he and Ruth belonged to for many years. His attendance at many of the car shows resulted with a trophy or an award. Herb had a pilot's license and once flew over Lake Michigan in a Cessna. He was a jack-of-all-trades who was always willing to learn something new. Recently he was teaching himself to type and play guitar. He is survived by sons, Gerald (Ellen) and Dan (Janet), and granddaughter, Carmen (special friend-Jared Manske). He is also survived by a brother, Frank (Pauline) Dargel; sisters, Mabel Wagner and Eva Mittlesteadt; brother-in-law, Johnnie (Annie) Wegner; many nieces, nephews and friends. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. today, Aug. 18, at Zion Lutheran Church, LaValle, with Pastor Robert Butler officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery, Reedsburg, with military rites conducted by Reedsburg VFW Post 1916.
