He grew up near Madison graduating from Beadle High School in 1963. He received a bachelors degree from University of South Dakota and his masters degree from University of Alaska - Fairbanks. He worked at the Canistota State Bank before moving to Watertown. He worked for Watertown Agency, F&M Bank and worked in construction management for North Central Construction and Brownlee and Hays Construction in Watertown. He moved back to Madison in 2005.

Survivors include one son, Nathan (Jennifer) of Montrose, and one daughter, Sara (Justin) Withers of Paris, Texas; two grandsons; two brothers, John (Diane) and Rick (Shelly), both of Madison; nine sisters, Virginia (Curtis) Ebsen of Madison, Sharon Hemmer, Rose (Dick) Stahl, Joan Ratzloff, Mary Ann (Joe) Mierau and Carol Betz, all of Sioux Falls, Katheen (Bob) Haynes of St. Paul, Minn., Connie Hemmer and Roxy (Chuck) Burns, both of Colorado Springs, Colo.

He was also preceded in death by his parents, one brother, and one sister.
