    Helen was born on June 6, 1918 in Lyman County, South Dakota to Reinhold and Eugena "Emelia" (Meillaud) Juhnke. She graduated from Kennebec High School in 1936. She attended one year of nursing school in Sioux City, Iowa. She was married to Forrest "Pat" Spencer in 1938. She had made her home in the Washta area the past 65 years. She was a homemaker, involved in the family farming operation and had also worked at the Cherokee Mental Health Institute in the mid 1950's. She was a member of the Pilgrim Lutheran Church, the Ladies Aide, had been a Sunday School teacher, and was involved in area card and craft clubs. She enjoyed ceramics, gardening, sewing and reading.

    She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Forrest "Pat" Spencer on September 5, 2000, one son, Jerry, two grandchildren and two great grandsons, a brother Art Juhnke and' a sister Lydia Juhnke Weller

    She is survived by two daughters: Valeria Rupp and her husband Charles of Cherokee, Iowa, Sharon Kazos and her husband George of Sioux City, Iowa; three sons: Mike Spencer and his wife Joan of Hubbard, Nebraska, John Spencer and his wife Sharen of Rapid City, South Dakota, Phil Spencer and his wife Patricia of Meriden, Iowa; 15 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren; one brother Walt Juhnke of Presho, South Dakota; two sisters: Ida Juhnke Smith of Vivian, South Dakota and Irene Juhnke Jewell of Dallas, Texas.

    Ida was born November 18, 1906 to Reinhold and Emelie Meillaud Juhnke on the family farm homestead south of Vivian, SD. After attending grade school there, she went to Presho and graduated from high school in 1926.

    She attended Teacher's College in Springfield, SD and taught in rural schools in Lyman County. Ida married Herbert Smith at Presho June 8, 1929. They had five children and lived in Lyman and Stanley County, then moving to a farm near Vivian, where they lived until retirement.

    Ida was a life member of the Vivian Legion Auxiliary, and a member of the Vivian Lutheran Church. She taught Sunday school, and was active in the women's organizations there. She derived great pleasure from her work with projects for Lutheran World Relief, helping with quilt making for many, many years. Ida was extensively traveled, which she enjoyed, but was always happy to get back to her home in South Dakota.

    Ida is survived by her sons, Lorne and wife Carolyn, Dick and Lyle and his wife Mary; one brother Walt of Presho and one sister Irene Jewell of Rockwall, TX, thirteen grandchildren and twenty-three great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

    She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Herb in 1982, a son Robert and daughter Marlys in 1939, a daughter-in-law Joyce in 2002, and one grandson, Harlan; a brother Art and wife, two sisters Lydia Weller and Helen Spencer and their spouses, and in-laws Mable Juhnke and Earl Jewell.
