His life of useful work ended, Mr. Sudbeck passed away at 15 minutes after nine Saturday mrning at the age of 78 years- firend of God and man. Born in Germany. Joseph Sudbeck, son of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Sudbeck was born Sept. 11, 1857 at Oldenburg, Germany. When but a lad of 11 years he came to this country in company with his parents Mr. and Mrs. Herman Sudbeck, Herman, Barney, and Josephine. The family moved immediately following their immingration to
Cedar county settling on the original Sudbeck homestead six miles north of
Hartington. This country then was but an unbroken prairie, and the main trading centers were Yankton and Sioux City. Married at Bow Valley. On February 26, 1884, Miss Elizabeth Kohls, daughter of Mr. and mrs. Gerhard Kohls original pioneers of St. Helena became the bride of Joseph Sudbeck, son of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Sudbeck first pioneers in the Bow Valley community. Nuptial high mass was read by Rev. Father Uhing in the original and the first Bow Valley church erected there before the site of Hartington was laid out.
Often times in later years Mr. and Mrs. Sudbeck told of their wedding day in
the early pioneer days for it was at the time of their wedding that the town
of Hartington was being laid out and started. Mr. and Mrs. Sudbeck celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on February 5, 1934 when a large anniversary celebration was held at the home of their son Victor Sudbeck, living five miles north of Hartington at an all day gathering. The golden wedding anniversary was planned in detail by their children and was a happy occasion beginning at nine 0’clock with a mass at bow Valley Catholic Church. Following their wedding February 26, 1884 the young couple went housekeeping on the Sudbeck farm now occupied by their son Victor and family. There they resided 40 years until 12 years ago when they moved to Hartington where they purchased a home in the southwest part of town. Mr. and Mrs. Sudbeck were blessed with seven children; Will, victor, Barney, Isadore and Rose (Mrs. Louis Arens) all of the Hartington vicinity and Emma (mrs. Frank Wieseler) of Crofton, and Martha (Mrs. Henry Langferman) also of Hartington. The late Mr. Sudbeck had been a long and faithful member of the Catholic Church for 40 years, has attended the Bow Valley Church since moving to Hartington rarely missing a mornig attended mass at Holy Trinity Church. He was a member of Holy Name Society of the Holy Trinity Church.

DeathFebruary 1929Anna Sudbeck died in February 1929 at age 84 Mrs. Anna Kruse, who had lived on the same farm in Bow Valley for 60 years, died on the old homestead Saturday morning after an illness of about two weeks. Despite her age, Mrs. Kruse had been active until lately. Mrs. Kruse, formerly Miss Anna Sudbeck, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Herman Sudbeck, was born in Oldenburg, Germany on Christmas day, 1844. In 1869 she was married to Henry Kruse and the same year the newlyweds, and the bride's parents and their family, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Sudbeck, came to America coming at once to the Bow Valley
Community where they took homesteads near each other. Mr. Kruse passed away about 38 years ago, and since that time, Mrs. Kruse has continued as head of the family, and director of its activities. She was a member of the Bow Valley Church, and in her more active years an ardent church worker. Mrs. Kruse is survived by six children, Henry, who lives near the old
homestead, Frank at Crofton, August, Steve, Louis and Mary, all at home, by 15 grandchildren, four brothers and one sister. The brothers and sisters are Joe Sudbeck of Hartington, Herman, Steve, and Bernard Sudbeck of Bow Valley, and Sister Magdalene at the convent in York. Funeral services were held Monday morning at 10:00 at St. Peter and Paul's at Bow Valley, with Rev. Father Anton Birnback officiating, and burial was in the Bow Valley cemetery by the side of her husband. Pallbearers were all nephews of Mrs. Kruse. William, Victor, and
Bernard, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Sudbeck of Hartington, and Herman, Paul, and Anton, sons of Mr.and Mrs. Steve Sudbeck of Bow Valley.
