He later worked as a supervisor at Gerber Products until his retirement in 1991. John was a lifelong member of St. John Ev. Lutheran Church and a member of the Reedsburg American Legion and the V.F.W. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, reading, watching the birds and spending time with his granddaughters. Survivors include his wife, Marjorie; his son and daughter-in-law: Paul and Jennifer Traeder, of Columbus; two granddaughters: Amelia and Kathryn; three sisters-in-law: Lorraine Traeder, Kathleen Swenink and Joan (Bruce) Elliott; many nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife: Imogene Traeder and his brother: William. Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 P.M. on Sunday, January 7, 2018 at St. John Ev. Lutheran Church in Reedsburg with Pastor David Glesne officiating. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Reedsburg Area Veterans Honor Guard. There will be a visitation from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. on Saturday at the Hoof Funeral Home in Reedsburg and after 12 noon on Sunday at the church. The Hoof Funeral Home is serving the family.

He is survived by his wife of almost 62 years, Ann Messerli of Prairie du Chien; five daughters, Sharon Stagman, Darlene (Jack) Kellogg, Donna (Gene) Bedward and Judy (Randy) Halverson all of Prairie du Chien, Bonnie (Fred) Sautter of Farley, Iowa; a son Dennis (Cindy) Messerli of Janesville; a brother Louis (Betty) Messerli of Clinton, Iowa; 18 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son-in-law Clarence Stagman, a sister Evelyn Messerli and two grandsons.
    Funeral services will be Friday, at 11 a.m. at the Garrity Funeral Home Chapel, Rev. James Warosh S.J. officiating, with burial in the Evergreen Cemetery, both in Prairie du Chien. Friends may call on Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. and on Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of services in the funeral home.
