Services were held in the Lutheran Church of Ireton, Iowa. Burial was in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Ireton, Iowa.

Mr. Twillman was born on December 28, 1876 near Bremann, Germany, and came to this country with his parents in April of 1888 and settled on a farm near Ireton. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith.

On September 9, 1903 he was united in marriage to Miss Martha Louise Suter. The couple then moved to a farm south of Ireton where they farmed for seven years. He then moved to Ireton and went into the dairy business, which he continued for 36 years.

On January 31 he was taken ill and went to the Sacred Heart Hospital.

Mt. Twillman is suvived by his widow; a son, Harold; a grandson, Dale; a daughter-in-law, Ernice; four brothers, Martin, Henry, George and Adolph all of Ireton; and three sisters, Mrs. Reinie Onken of Ireton, Mrs. Freda Dauberman and Mrs. Martha Luschen of Hawarden.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Russ Toben, Lee Swanson, Stephen Swanson, Joe Toben, Kirk Swanson, Roland Swanson, and Carl Swanson. Honorary casket bearers will be her granddaughters, Laura Philips, Kristin Wicks, Heather Swanson, Carrie Wilken, Angela Wilson, Monica Kiel, Theresa Tucker, and Melanie Brown.

Esther Marie Sand was born in Richland Township, Union County, South Dakota to John Edward and Bertha Catherine (Woltman) Sand on December 18, 1912. The family lived on a farm East of Akron, Iowa where she attended country school. They then moved to a farm near Highmore, South Dakota where she continued her education at a country school and high school. The family then moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin where Esther graduated from Lincoln High School with the Class of 1931. Following high school, Esther worked as a "au pair" for the Reynolds family for seven years.

Esther was united marriage to Roland Swanson on November 23, 1938 at the First Congregational Church parsonage in Sioux City, Iowa. Esther and Roland began farming his parents farm where she lived for the next 72 years. Esther enjoyed assisting Roland with the farming and being a homemaker for her family.

She was a longtime member of Immanuel Lutheran Church where she belonged to the E.L.C.W. and taught Sunday School. She was also a charter member of the Westfield P.T.A. and Westfield Band Mothers. Esther enjoyed gardening, flowers, and crocheting to include numerous rugs for family and friends. She was also an accomplished seamstress.

Survivors include her 4 children, Alyce Toben and her husband Marvin of Westfield, IA, Kenneth Swanson and his wife Betty of Le Mars, IA, Keith Swanson and his wife Janice of Akron, IA, and Lynn Swanson and his special friend LuAnn Schmeling of Buffalo, MN; 15 grandchildrean; 28 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John Edward and Bertha Catherine (Woltman) Sand; her husband, Roland on May 14, 1990; a sister, Genevieve Layton; 2 brothers, Edward and Harvey Sand; and a great granddaughter, Rachel Rose Toben.

Death15 September 2010Verda L. Wetrosky died on 15 September 2010 at age 90 Verda L. Akland was born September 10, 1920 in Merrill, IA to Elmer and Ruth (Eberhard) Wetrosky. She died September 15, 2010 at Bethesda of Beresford at the age of 90 years and five days.

She was raised near Merrill, was baptized at Merrill United Methodist Church and attended school from first through ninth grade at Liberty School near Merrill, Iowa. Her family moved to South Dakota in 1935 where Verda was confirmed at Peace Lutheran Church and she graduated from Alcester High School in 1938. She married Howard Lewison in 1939 and had their two sons, Wendell and Wayne. Howard died in 1947. Verda married Stanley Akland in 1948 and had their daughter, Lorene.

Verda and Stanley farmed southwest of Nora many years. They retired into Beresford in 1988. She was active in Roseni Lutheran Church, loved to read and do word puzzles. She and Stanley moved into Bethesda in 2001 and Stanley died in December of that year. Verda had resided there until her death.

She is survived by her children, Wendell (Arlene) of Columbia, TN, Wayne (Sharon) of Beresford, and Lorene (Tim) Wiggins of Lincoln, NE; eight grandchildren, Rick (Dee) Akland, Julie Cooper, Jennifer (Rob) Harrington, Kristi (Ivan) Petersen, Tony Akland, Jesse (Jean) Akland, Colin (Michelle) Wiggins and Emelyn (David) Theesen; great-grandchildren, Tanner Akland, Chase Cooper, Ella Harrington, Jesse, Josh, Brandi, Madi, Tara and Seth Petersen, Isabel and Olivia Theesen and Melanie and Tyson Wiggins; three brothers, Clinton (Bev) Wetrosky of Beresford, Dwight (Wava) Wetrosky of Alcester and Lowell (Norma) Wetrosky of Brandon; two sisters, Norma Stene and Irene Fickbohm both of Beresford and one sister-in-law, Shirley Wetrosky of CA. Verda was preceded in death by her two husbands, infant grandson, Joseph, parents and one brother, Donald.

Funeral services for Verda will be 2PM Sunday, Sept. 19, 2010 at Roseni Lutheran Church, rural Beresford. Visitation will be Saturday 2-8PM at Wass Funeral Home in Beresford with the family present from 6-8PM and a prayer service at 7PM. The family requests memorials to Roseni Lutheran Church or Bethesda of Beresford.
