Mass of Christian Burial was Feb. 27 at Holy Family (Immaculate Conception) Catholic Church, St. Helena, with Rev. Michael Keating officiating. Military services were provided by Wynot American Legion Post 31. Burial of the ashes will occur at a later date. Pallbearers were Rod Conners, Leo Kramper, Daryl Hochstein, Melvin Loecker, Bob Behrens and Larry Hix. Wintz Funeral Home, Hartington, was in charge of the arrangements. Ervin was born Feb. 12, 1941, at Crofton, to George and Katherine (Loecker) Zavadil. He grew up in the Crofton and Menominee area and attended Yankton (S.D.) High School. He joined the Marines in 1958 and served a year and a half in the Far East. After his discharge from the Marines, he moved to Pocatello, Idaho. Ervin married Joyce Pechan Jan. 26, 1963, in Pocatello. He worked as a carpenter and then became employed as an instructor of carpentry with the Job Corps spending most of his time in Ponca and Chadron. He retired in 2003 and he and Joyce moved to St. Helena in 2004. Ervin liked riding motorcycles, camping, woodworking, and playing cards with his family and friends. He was a member of the Holy Family (Immaculate Conception) Catholic Church, St. Helena; the Knights of Columbus; and the Carpenters Local 998, Sioux City, Iowa.
Survivors include his wife, Joyce, St. Helena; seven children and spouses, Denise Czop, Tyler, Texas; Laurie Zavadil, Ponca; Jennifer Carnell, Blair; Mark and Cindy Zavadil, Athens, Texas; Matt and Heather Zavadil, Celina, Texas; Missy and Chad Chicoine, Ponca; Adam Zavadil, Yankton, S.D; 16 grandchildren; a sister, Gen Yonke, Idaho Falls, Idaho; three brothers and their wives, Lawrence and Mary Ann Zavadil, Crofton; Don and Doris Zavadil, Merrill, Idaho; and Jerome and Carolyn Zavadil, Crofton. He was preceded in death by his parents.

She attended St. John the Baptist Parochial School in Fordyce thru the 10th grade. On September 21, 1943, she was married to Frank Pinkelman at Fordyce. Six sons and three daughters were born to them, Galen, Lois, Ann, David, Charles, Duane (Joe), Francis, Marie, and Thomas. Frank and Bernice farmed near St. James, NE until 1957 when they moved to their ranch east of Niobrara. They retired to town in 1975. Frank died in 1993. Bernice was a member of St. Williamas Catholic Church in Niobrara and its Altar Society, the Niobrara Senior Center, Friendship Club, and Book Club. She served on the Niobrara Public Library Board of Directors. She died Monday, July 7, 2008 at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton at the age of 86. Survivors include her sons, Galen and Dee Ann of Norfolk, David and Deb of Lincoln, Charles and Bonnie of Yankton, Duane (Joe) of Niobrara, Francis and Linda of Hoskins, Tom of Albion; daughters, Lois and Leon Grothe of Niobrara, Ann and Fred Sternberg of Niobrara, and Marie and Larry Ringstad of Omaha; 20 grandchildren; and 20 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; one infant son; one brother, Leander Suing; and one sister, Evelyn Bruning.
