The Melby-Bendorf Funeral Home & Crematory, Platteville, is in charge of arrangements.

He was born on Jan. 24, 1920, in Belmont, son of George and Edith (Engelke) Nodolf. He married Ruth Heer on May 26, 1951, at the Little Brown Church, Nashua, Iowa; she preceded him in death on April 8, 2003.

LaVerne served in the Air Force from May 15, 1942, until Aug. 2, 1945. He received the Good Conduct Medal, Distinguished Unite Badge, Asiatic Pacific Theater Medal and one Bronze Star.

Shorty worked for many years at UW-Platteville maintenance department. Prior to that, he worked at the Shell Bulk Plant and drove gas truck for Mobil, all in Platteville.

He was a life member of the Lutheran Church of Peace, Platteville. He was a member of the VFW and for many years the Platteville Golf and Country Club.

Shorty loved the game of golf and was proud of the hole-in-one he scored. He always looked forward to his annual golf outing with two of his grandsons, Jon and Bill. He also enjoyed woodworking and carving.

Surviving are a daughter, Karen (Rick) Slack, of Livingston; four grandchildren, Jon (Celeste) Slack, of Davie, Fla., Todd Slack and Bill (Britney) Slack, of Mount Horeb, and Nikki (Adam Ochab) Slack, of Livingston; six great-grandchildren, Kyle Collins, Jordan Slack, Breanna Conner, Sierra Slack, Tamarae Towns and Malloy Slack; a great-great-granddaughter, Launa Collins; and many nieces and nephews. He also was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Russell and Orville Nodolf. Memorials may be given to the Lutheran Church of Peace.
