Walter "Wally" David Mercer, Jr., 78, of Chatfield died Monday, Sept. 12, 2011, at Seasons Hospice in Rochester. He was born Dec. 11, 1932, in Rochester, to Walter Mercer, Sr., and Ruth (Eisenman) Mercer. He graduated from Chatfield High School in 1951. He joined the Army from 1953-1955 and was stationed in Germany. On June 15, 1957, he married Helen Allen at Sumner Center Church. Wally worked for the Olmsted Community Hospital (now the Olmsted Medial Center Hospital) for 25 years as a boiler engineer. He also was a dairy farmer and worked at the Chosen Valley Elementary School as a custodian/boiler engineer. Wally enjoyed the Minnesota Twins and Vikings, motorcycles and going to Army reunions to see his buddies. Survivors include his wife, Helen; one son, Keith (Shelly) of Chatfield; one daughter, Deanna Capelle of Spring Valley; three grandchildren, Kelsey, Brittney, and Marick; and one brother, Robert of Rochester. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and one sister. Riley Funeral Home of Chatfield is in charge of arrangements.
