Mary was a member of Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church. Mary is survived by three children, John (Margaret) and Gary (Connie) both of Oregon, and Michael of Universal City, Texas. She is also survived by eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Mary was preceded in death by her husband, David; her daughter, Anna Schmelzer Fontana; and three grandchildren, Keith and Kevin Schmelzer, and Benjamin Hamilton; as well as her parents; and brothers, Vincent and Clarence. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, June 17, 2011, at OUR LADY QUEEN OF PEACE CATHOLIC CHURCH, 401 S. Owen Drive, Madison at 1 p.m., with Monsignor Kenneth Fiedler officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memory Gardens, Madison. A visitation will be held on Thursday, June 16, 2011, at JOYCE-RYAN FUNERAL HOME, 5701 Odana Road, Madison, from 4 p.m. - 7 p.m. and again at the church on Friday from noon until the time of Mass. She furthered her education and received a degree as a Licensed Practical Nurse from University of Arkansas Community College at Hope, Ark., in 2003.As a strong, caring and positive individual she was never short of a perfect ideal and willingly gave her time wherever needed. She also enjoyed cooking, crocheting, painting and looking for bargains while shopping. Left to celebrate and cherish her life on this earth are her mother, Mary Schmelzer (David, deceased) of Madison; her daughters, LaDonna Hamilton-Stueart of Prescott, Ark., LaShelle Hamilton of Bartlett, Tenn., and LaToya Hamilton of Hot Springs, Ark; a daughter-in-law, Denese Hamilton (Benjamin D., deceased) of Loganville, Georgia; three brothers, John Schmelzer (Maggie) and Gary Schmelzer (Connie) of Oregon, Wis., and Michael Schmelzer of Universal City, Texas; and a sister-in-law, Freddie Hamilton of Prescott, Ark. She also leaves behind her much beloved grandchildren, Joseph Stueart Jr., Luther Stueart, Alex Hamilton, Daloris Stueart, Rontarious Hamilton and NaShea' Goetzendanner, LaKeisha Hamilton, Jaleesa Hamilton; and a great-grandson, Darius Stueart. In addition, a host of nieces, nephews and friends are left to celebrate her memory. She was born on July 2, 1924, in Richland County, Wisconsin, the daughter of Richard M. and Clara I. (Faber) Gassen. On May 5, 1947, Agnes was united in marriage to Benjamin M. Walsh. This marriage was blessed with two children. Ben preceded her in death on August 15, 1974.

Agnes worked as a cook for many years at St. Anthony’s Catholic School in Cazenovia, Tri County in Reedsburg, Magdalene Home and Jefferson Meadows in Baraboo. She was a former member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Cazenovia, and a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Baraboo. She was also a 50 year member of the Cazenovia American Legion Post #491 Auxiliary. Agnes enjoyed baking apple pies, cooking, gardening and lawn care. She was a skilled Euchre player and not a bashful winner. Agnes is once again able to enjoy the Tennessee Waltz with her beloved Ben.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; and brothers, Martin, Francis, Gilbert and James Gassen, and a brother in infancy; sister, Martha Eckert, and sister-in-law, Armilla Walsh.

Agnes is survived by her daughter, Patricia Thomas and her husband, Gary Morgan of Baraboo;

Survivors include her daughter: Laura (Garland) Fruit of Richland Center 5 Grandchildren: Ron (Beth), Norman (Sandy), Larry (Lisa) and Roger (Sheila) Fruit and Jill (Greg) Wells. 16 Great-Grandchildren 1 brother: Clyde (Naomi) Johnson of Sextonville 1 sister: Marjorie Denman of Richland Center 2 sisters-in-law: Verlie Johnson of Wyeville, WI and Dorothy Johnson of Richland Center and Texas. She was also preceded in death by 2 infant sons who died at birth; her parents; brothers, Everett, Harold and Verne; sisters, Veda Morrick and Gwen Stoddard. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am on Wednesday, February 15, 2006 at the Pratt Memorial Chapel. Rev. Charles Hayes will officiate. Burial will be in the Pleasant Ridge Cemetery in Willow Township. Friends may call at the Pratt Memorial Chapel on Tuesday from 4-7pm or on Wednesday morning from 8:00 am until the time of the services. The family has suggested that memorials may be made to Pine Valley Healthcare, Church of the Nazarene or to the Brewer Library. The Pratt Funeral Service is assisting the family with their arrangements.

She taught for six years in one room schools, serving students at Brush Creek and Lower Horse Creek. Laura married Garland B. Fruit on August 21, 1954, and they began farming together on Ash Ridge. Laura and Garland were active members of the Ash Ridge and Richland Center First Baptist Churches through their 63 year marriage. In later years, Laura and Garland enjoyed volunteering with the Richland Center Lions Club and Meals on Wheels. Laura also spent time as a literacy tutor, a member of Richland County Homemakers, Partners of the Richland Hospital and the Baptist Ladies Missionary Society.

Laura is survived by her children: Ron (Beth) of Richland Center, Norman (Sandy) of Viola, Larry (Lisa) of Richland Center, Roger (Sheila) of West Salem, Jill (Greg) Wells of Elkhorn;

Her grandchildren: Jeremy (Justine) Fruit, Greg (Kim) Fruit, Sarah (Ross) Beier, Darren (Sarah) Fruit,

Laura was preceded in death by her husband and her parents, two infant brothers, and brothers and sisters-in-law: Marilyn Williams, Wyvonne Merry, Emmogene Emerson and Hubert Fruit.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Burial will be at a later date in the Ash Ridge Cemetery. The Pratt Funeral and Cremation Service is assisting the family with arrangements.
