Lowell Oliver Bennett

Father*Elmer O. Bennett b. c 1893

Name TypeDateDescription
Name VariationLowell Oliver Bennett was also known as L. O.
Life EventDateDescription
Birth3 April 1918Lowell Oliver Bennett was born on 3 April 1918 at La Harpe, Hancock, Illinois.
He was the son of Elmer O. Bennett and Leta Albaugh.
Marriage1941Lowell Oliver Bennett married Fern Tate in 1941.
Death29 October 1943Lowell Oliver Bennett died on 29 October 1943 at Canton, Fulton, Illinois, at age 25 Lowell Bennett, 25, LaHarpe Trucker, Dies
Midway witnesses said they saw the truck stop along the roadside at about 5 a.m. Friday and also that two other trucks parked in the same vicinity at approximately the same time. The other trucks drove on about 8:00 and when Bennett's truck did not move out at that time, they felt something was amiss and investigated. They found Lowell slumped over the wheel unconscious and noticed that by the position of his body and his hands he had perhaps in the haze of a sensation of approaching incapacitation managed mechanically to stop the vehicle.
First reports confused friends here with the possibilities that Lowell had died of carbon monoxide poisoning or diabetic coma, but both possibilities were ruled out by medical attendants.
It was a large crowd of truly mourning friends that went to the Banks funeral home on Sunday afternoon to pay their final respects at funeral services conducted by Rev. James Q. Moore. Interment followed in La Harpe cemetery.
Lowell, oldest child of Elmer and Leta Albaugh Bennett, was born April 3, 1918 in LaHarpe and at his death was 25 years, six months and 26 days of age.
He spent his boyhood on the family farm south of LaHarpe, receiving his elementary education at Tarman School and later attending LaHarpe high school.
Mechanically minded and rugged physically, Lowell had a capacity for continued hard work that was exceeded only by his zeal and seeming hunger for work that would stagger most men. He worked for a time with well drillers and then entered the Pryor blacksmith shop. Later he and his brother, Lisle, purchased the shop and continued to run it quite successfully. Also they were associated in a trucking business, wherein they served many farmers of this community.
Regardless of the task, Lowell accepted it with enthusiasm, always giving to himself, his employer and his patron the best that was his to give. He will be sorely missed by his parents, his brothers and sisters, his child and the many persons with whom he had enjoyed friendly dealings.
Lowell was married to Miss Fern Tate of Lomax on February 21, 1941 and their union on February 21, 1941 was blessed by the birth of a son, Sheldon.
