He was engaged in cutting eight-inch pine blocks of wood with a rip saw, when one of the blocks "kicked back" with terrific force and struck him directly over the heart. He fell to the floor, attempted to rise to his feet, collapsed and died within five minutes. Henry Friedman, of Clark Street in Dubuque, a fellow worker, witnessed the accident.
