He attended public schools in Lone Rock and studied philosophy and theology at St. Francis Seminary in Milwaukee He was ordained to the Priesthood at St. Raphael's Cathedral in Madison, WI. by Bishop William P. O'Connor on May 26, 1956. He served as assistant pastor of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Parish, Portage; St. Bernard's Parish, Madison; St. Patrick Parish, Lodi; and Holy Rosary Parish, Darlington. He served as pastor of St. Thomas Parish Potosi and St. Ignatius Parish Mount Horeb, with the mission of Holy Reedeemer Parish, Perry, from which he retired in 1996 after 28 years as pastor. He also served the diocese as assistant director of Catholic Welfare and area vocation director for Iowa and Lafayette Counties. A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Wednesday June 5th, 2002, at St. Ignatius Catholic Church. Bishop William H. Bullock was the main celebrant and Monsignor Delbert L. Schemelzer was the homilist. The following were concelebrants: Rev. Paul U. Arinze, Rev. John Urban, Rev. Arthur R. Koth and Rev. Roger H. Taylor. Fr. Brophy was buried in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery in Avoca next to his parents.

He practiced dentistry in Oak Park, Ill. for 42 years before hisretirement. He was an Army veteran of World War I. He is survived by his wife, Lucille, whom he married Dec. 5, 1936.
