The son of Cornelius “Case” and Nellie (Van Holland) Vonk, Richard was born Feb. 27, 1921, in Otley, Iowa. On Oct. 14, 1950, he was united in marriage to Lorraine Jenamann in Dubuque, Iowa. Richard grew up in Otley and was a longtime resident of Newton. Richard attended school in Otley and worked as a supervisor in porcelain at the Maytag Company for 38 years, retiring in 1984. He served his country in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II, and he was a member of the VFW, American Legion, Moose Lodge, Elks Lodge and the Last Man’s Club. Richard also went to McDonald’s every morning for several years to have coffee with friends. Richard enjoyed fishing, traveling, music, hunting mushrooms, going out to eat, spending time with his grandkids, gardening — especially tomatoes — and talking with friends. Richard is survived by three sons, Richard C. Vonk of Jacksonville, Fla., Robert Vonk of Montezuma and Rodger Vonk of Newton; a daughter, Raeleen Vonk (and Steve Catlett) of Newton; seven grandchildren, Kim Batterson, Kristopher Vonk, Casey Vonk, Erick Vonk, Davis Vonk, Darien Vonk and Stacy Vonk; two great-grandchildren, Parker Vonk and Kallen Gifford; three sisters, Evelena Van De Wege, Effie Robson and Cora Terpstra; and a special friend, Gladys Weaver. Richard attended school in Otley and worked as a supervisor in porcelain at the Maytag Company for 38 years, retiring in 1984. There will be a celebration of Rob’s life on Friday, July 27, 2012, from 5 to 8 p.m. at The Kirkwood Room, 515 Kirkwood Ave., in Iowa City. He married Mary Reinecke on January 29th, 1951. They were joined in marriage for 63 wonderful years. Together they had 10 children and many grandchildren who always kept them young at heart. His greatest pleasures in life were his family and working. He retired from the Dubuque Packing Company in 1982 after 30 years. Throughout his time there and until his death he was devoted to working his 90-acre farm and gardening with his wife. He was a very humble, loving and hardworking person, beloved by all who knew him. He led by example when he taught us all the meaning of honoring your parents as he helped to care for his Mother and Father-in-law in their last year. He was admired more than he knew for his undeniable commitment to faith and family. LeRoy was an avid bowler for many years and even scored a perfect 300. In their spare time he and Mary were surrounded by loved ones as their door was always open to family and friends. He loved playing cards, games and watching golf and tennis with his visitors. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him. She died on 11 March 1959 at Grant, Wisconsin, at age 48 Services for Miss Helen Nellie Richter, 48, who died Wednesday morning, March 11, at the Memorial hospital in Lancaster; where held Friday at 9:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Church in Glen Haven with the Rev. Lambert M. Marx officiating. Burial was made in the family lot at St. Mary's Cemetery in Bloomington. The Metcalfe Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Casket bearers were Leroy Esser, Robert Hamilton, Paul Frair, Elgie Richter, Roy Myers, and Robet Vogt.

The daughter of Mrs. Catherine Vogt Richter and the late Albert Richter, Nellie was born September 5, 1910, at Patch Grove. She was an invalid for the past 32 years and had been a diabetic the past several years.

She enjoyed working with her hands doing a considerable handiwork until the last 2 years when her eyesight failed. After she became too much too care for he mother she was place in a number of Nursing Homes. At Christmas time she was taken to the home of her sister Mrs. Stewart Bradley, Glen Haven; who cared for her more than a month before she entered the Dresen Nursing Home in Cassville.

Survivors include her mother, five sisters; Mrs. Florence Hill, Mrs. Lawrence (Sabina) Strand, Mrs. Marlow (Anna) Waller, all of Prairie du Chien; Mrs. Charles (Mary) Berger, Aurora, Illinois; and Mrs. Stewart (Alberta) Bradley, Glen Haven; one brother, Celestine, Cassville.

She was preceded in death by her father in 1924 and a sister Dorothy, in 1953.

Sabina C. Richter died on 29 October 2004 at Wisconsin at age 91 Sabina C. Strnad, 91, of Prairie du Chien, died Friday, Oct. 29, 2004, at the Prairie Health Care Center. She was born in Grant County, on Dec. 3, 1912, daughter of Albert and Kathryn (Vogt) Richter.

She married Lawrence Strnad on May 14, 1938, in Prairie du Chien. He preceded her in death on Feb. 4, 1985. She was an active member of St. John's Church in Prairie du Chien and worked for the school lunch program for many years.

She is survived by two sons, Gerald (Judy) and Michael (Sharon), both of Prairie du Chien; two sisters, Mary Berger of Prairie du Chien, and Alberta Bradley of Glen Haven.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a brother, Celestine Richter; four sisters, Ann Waller, Florence Hill, Nellie and Dorothy Richter.

A Mass of Christian Burial was Monday, Nov. 1, 2004, at St. John's Catholic Church, Rev. Hubert Boschert SJ officiating, with burial in the Calvary Cemetery, both in Prairie du Chien.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, at St. Johns Catholic Church; with burial in the Calvary Cemetery, both in Prairie du Chien. Friends may call Sunday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Garrity Funeral Home in Prairie du Chien, where there will be a rosary at 4 p.m. and a wake scripture service at 7:30 p.m.
