Al thoroughly enjoyed life. Always with a joke at hand, many knew him as a "character." He loved to laugh, and he loved to make those around him smile.

In the summer, he spent his weekends camping at Palace Campground, where he had a permanent site. Sitting around a campfire with family and friends, telling stories and singing songs to a guitar was his favorite pastime.

Al enjoyed traveling with his wife, Shirley, and many lifelong friends. He treasured a very special vacation they took to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, with his daughter, Lisa and her family.

Family was everything to Al. He was a caring husband and a kind and gentle father and grandfather to more than just his own. He had a genuine soft spot for all children and over the years was like a father or grandfather to many. He was a devoted son and brother. He especially cherished his brother, Robert, who was his dearest friend.

Surviving are his wife, Shirley McClain ; two daughters, Lisa A. (Tim) Bastian, of Chanhassen, Minn., and Amanda M. (Clay) Kisting, of Dubuque; four grandchildren, Christina and Alyssa Bastian, Hunter Kisting and Colton Kisting, his newest grandson; a brother, Robert (Joyce) McClain , of Dubuque; a brother-in-law, Charles Richardson, of Dubuque; and many nieces, nephews and great friends.
