Death23 February 2008Colonel Donald Carlyle Askew died on 23 February 2008 at Paducah, McCracken, Kentucky, at age 71 Colonel Donald Askew was called to service one last time Saturday, February 23, 2008, to serve in God's glorious army. He served his country well for 30 years, rising to the rank of colonel before retiring in 1988 and returning to his home in Brookport with his wife, Judy. His retirement was to be short-lived as he was called to serve as a civilian consultant to the government of Saudi Arabia from 1991 to 1994 and again in 1998 to serve as a consultant to the government of Croatia for another year.
Askew was a deacon in the Baptist faith and a member of First Baptist Church of Paducah. He was well known in the area for his part in establishing the Brookport Betterment Committee. He and the late Leo Motley were co-founders of the Brookport Library.
He was a 1958 graduate of the University of Illinois and a 1978 graduate of the War College in Carlisle, Pa. He served several tours of duty in the U.S. Army, notable three tours in Washington, D.C. where he served in the Pentagon and as advisor to Presidents Carter and Reagan. Askew leaves behind his wife of 50 years, Judy, and four children, Leah Askew, David Askew and his wife, Pat, Douglas Askew and his wife, Cheryl, and Andrea Bonk and her husband, Ryan; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Askew was preceded in death by his father, Carlyle Askew, and his mother, Grace Robinett Askew, and an infant son, James Patrick Askew. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, February 27, 2008, at Milner & Orr Funeral Home of Paducah with the Rev. Jim Ewing officiating. Military graveside services will be Thursday, February 28, 2008, at the Mounds National Cemetery in Mounds. Visitation will be Tuesday, February 26, 2008, from 6 until 8 p.m. at Milner & Orr Funeral Home of Paducah.
