Life EventDateDescription
Birth9 September 1921Laura Jane Eberhardt was born on 9 September 1921.
She was the daughter of Edward Eberhardt and Maude (?).
Death28 April 2013Laura Jane Eberhardt died on 28 April 2013 at age 91
On April 28, 2013, our dear mother Laura Jane (Eberhardt) Cerling, received her heart’s most deep desire, to go and be with her Lord. Hers was a life beautifully formed by a faith that began in her teenage years, and which strengthened and shaped her until her final rest at age 91.

Laura Jane grew up in Elmhurst, Illinois, where she met her high school sweetheart Robert (Bob) Cerling. They married March 12, 1945 while Bob was serving in the Navy. After World War II, they moved to Itasca, Illinois and began raising their six children. They moved to Clinton, Iowa in 1964 where they lived for twenty years, then moving on to Camanche, Iowa. In 2002 they moved to Evansville to live near their son, David Cerling. While living in Illinois, they helped found the Itasca Evangelical Free Church. In Iowa they served actively as leaders in the Clinton Evangelical Free Church, where Laura also was church secretary for a number of years. In Evansville Laura Jane and Bob continued their commitment to serve Christ’s church as members of Olivet Evangelical Presbyterian Church and Gideons International.

Laura Jane did not entertain; she practiced hospitality. Through this gift, her love reached around the world as she welcomed visitors of many nations, cultures, and languages into her home. She was wise, and her faith was deep, strong, practical, and pithy. Many sought her out for counsel and prayer. Although she never actively sought publication, some of her written stories were published in the El Paso Times, as well as in a book, My Roots Go Back to Loving. There is no way to easily summarize the breadth, depth, and power of her influence in the lives of our family and the many individuals who walked with her for a time during her life’s journey.

Laura Jane was preceded in death by her parents, Maude and Edward Eberhardt, and by her brother, Edward. She is survived by her husband, Robert, her six children and their spouses: Penny Cerling and Jeff Skarda of Houston, TX; Becky and Dennis Powers of Vinton, TX; Thure and Mahala Cerling of Salt Lake City, UT; David and Ellen Cerling of Evansville, IN; Roy and Teresa Cerling of Wycoff, MN; and Lee and Becky Cerling of Pasadena,CA; and by her 13 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

She covered our lives in showers of blessing through her love and her prayers, and we will greatly miss her. Nevertheless, we rejoice that she has now been received into her heart’s true home. There will be visitation at Olivet Presbyterian Church, 5600 Oak Hill Road, from 1:00 to 3:00 on Sunday, May 5, followed by a service of celebration at 3:00, also at the church.

In lieu of flowers, Robert and Laura Jane have requested that donations be given to the Deacon fund of Olivet Evangelical Presbyterian Church; Gideon International Ministries; or the Southwest Indiana Regional Council on Aging (SWIRCA).
