Lillian Jeanne (Buckles) Van Genderen was born on November 11, 1913, in Mellette County, SD to John and Nellie (Kooiman) Buckles. She attended school at Carroll Twp. #4 near Joubert, SD. On May 6, 1932 she was married to John J. Van Genderen at the CRC parsonage in New Holland, SD. In 1934 they moved to Grangeville, ID and returned to South Dakota in 1936 where they farmed near New Holland for 10 years. They then bought the Wilhite homestead in Aurora Co. where they farmed for 45 years. They retired in 1981 and moved to Aurora Center, SD where John died in 1995.

She was a member of the Aurora Reformed Church of Aurora Center where she was a longtime member of the Dorcas Society. She also taught Sunday School and catechism. She enjoyed gardening and was a great cook, making wonderful homemade bread and cinnamon rolls.

Grateful for having shared in Lillians life: her three children: John D. Van Genderen of Stickney, SD, Rosalie Spaans of Mitchell, SD and Bradley (Shirley) Van Genderen of Corsica, SD; six grandchildren; a step grandchild; 14 great grandchildren; a great-great granddaughter; a sister, Ione Druyvestein of Custer, SD; a sister-in-law, Margaret Buckles of Eugene, OR; along with many nieces and nephews.

Lillian was preceded in death by: her husband of 62 years, John; a son, LeRoy; a son-in- law, Marvin Spaans; her parents; three sisters: Mary Doorn, Ruth Vander Pol and Wilma Van Vuuren; and two brothers: Alan who died in World War II and Warren.
