Harold Pulvermacher

M, b. 1 May 1925, d. 27 March 2018
Father*Conrad Pulvermacher b. c 1887
Mother*Mary Wachter b. c 1895
Life EventDateDescription
Birth1 May 1925Harold Pulvermacher was born on 1 May 1925 at Wisconsin.
He was the son of Conrad Pulvermacher and Mary Wachter.
Marriage1949Harold Pulvermacher married Ruth Louise Lockman, daughter of George Lockman and Evalina Poquette, in 1949.
Death27 March 2018Harold Pulvermacher died on 27 March 2018 at age 92 Harold Pulvermacher passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 27, 2018 at Greenway Manor in Spring Green with family at his side. One of his fears was that he wasn’t worthy of others’ admiration. That couldn’t be further from reality. By reading this you are affirming his life was well worth appreciating.

Harold was born on May 1, 1925, the son of Conrad and Mary (Wachter) Pulvermacher. He lived his early years during the Great Depression and along the way learned how to work hard, how to save relentlessly, and how to make ends--that were way too far apart--meet. He left formal schooling after 8th grade to help support his family. As a young adult he caught the eye of Ruth Lockman at a dance hall. They married in 1949, danced the Blue Skirt Waltz many times, and celebrated 65+ years of married life.

Together he and Ruth worked the farm and raised their family. They each also worked outside the farm. His labors were physical—farmer, construction worker, state park groundskeeper, and Umhoefer Lumber yardman. A sore back and sweat-filled shirt were the signs of a good day’s work. He enjoyed gardening, raising poultry, spending time with grandchildren, hunting, and perfecting his rooster crows.

Harold is survived by his 4 children Carl (Darcy) Pulvermacher, Nancy (Keith) Maxwell, Sue (Allan Alt) Pulvermacher-Alt, and Julie (Rob) Bauer; and his siblings—sister Mary Jane Dischler and brother Conrad (wife Pat). He was blessed with 11 surviving grandchildren—Kendra (Jason) Schluter, Tod, Beau, and Cody (Lori) Pulvermacher; Kyle (Jenn), Nathan (Julie), and Kallan (KayDee) Maxwell; Justin and Maggie Alt; and Lucas (Courtney) and Jillian Bauer. His further survivors include his precious 8 great grandchildren—Andrew & Tyler Maxwell; Tessa & Macie Schluter; McKenzie & Logan Maxwell; and Connie & Vivian Pulvermacher. While not related by bloodline he is also survived by members of the Swenson family--farm neighbors for generations who have become part of the family. Harold was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth, his parents, his sisters Gertrude (and husband Melchior) Ballweg and Helen (and husband Louis) Ballweg, his brother Paul (and wife Ruth), his special brother-in-law Simon Dischler, and numerous other family members and friends. As you read this Harold is busily telling tales of 28-point bucks and 9-pound tomatoes to those he loved who went to heaven before him.

Even though Harold often looked at life through the discouraged lens of clinical depression he never faltered on being kind to and generous with those he cared about and loved. He would pass the bowl of potatoes to everyone at the table before he served himself. He would discreetly pull out his wallet to share a few extra dollars with a grandchild on their birthday. He would share the abundance of his garden from the back of his pickup truck with all who heeded his produce call. He tenderly cared for Ruth and would sing his own version of Amazing Grace to her in her latter stages of Alzheimer’s because she loved the song. Harold’s gentle soul lived beneath a sometimes-gruff exterior. Those who were lucky got to know the man beneath the upside-down smile.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Tuesday, April 3, 2018 at 11:00 A.M. at St. John’s Catholic Church in Spring Green with burial in the church cemetery. Name TypeDateDescription
Married Name1949As of 1949,her married name was Pulvermacher.
Life EventDateDescription
Birth1928Ruth Louise Lockman was born in 1928.
She was the daughter of George Lockman and Evalina Poquette.
Marriage1949Ruth Louise Lockman married Harold Pulvermacher, son of Conrad Pulvermacher and Mary Wachter, in 1949.
Death4 October 2015Ruth Louise Lockman died on 4 October 2015 Ruth Louise (Lockman) Pulvermacher age 87, died peacefully on October 4, 2015 at Greenway Manor Nursing Home after a long journey with Alzheimer’s disease. Ruth was born in 1928 in the same house in which she raised her family on a farm she cherished. She was raised by her father, George Lockman, and her grandmother Margaret Goeltz. Ruth’s mother, Evalina Poquette, died from complications related to mom’s childbirth so she never met her mom. By most standards mom’s childhood was difficult. Her grandmother died when she was only eight. The weight of the Depression in the 30s–and beyond–was heavy. She and her sister Mary Margaret were extremely close sisters. Along with their brother Richard, they all worked hard on the farm every day. She loved to learn and walked 2-3 miles to and from school each day.

So, while she had every reason to be bitter about a tough life growing up, she saw nothing but goodness and felt nothing but joy with all the blessings that came her way. Optimism is described as a glass always half-full; her glass overflowed constantly. She loved her work as the pastry chef at The Spring Green Restaurant; a job she cherished for 25 years. She provided tender care and loving support to others working in the home health care industry for a number of years. At her last job, she couldn’t believe they paid her to be a hospitality greeter at The House on the Rock meeting people and telling them stories about the area she so dearly loved. While working full-time away from the farm she also worked full-time on the farm—growing vegetables, quilting, milking cows, baking, tossing hay bales, sewing, tending flower gardens, playing cards and enjoying time with grandchildren. The spring in her step was strong and she jumped into her work with boundless enthusiasm. Work was never a burden; she embraced her work with the same joy she embraced her life.

Ruth is survived by many who loved her deeply and learned from her eternally optimistic spirit. Harold, her husband of 65 years, was her rock of support during these trying years while Ruth battled Alzheimer’s. He was literally there for her every day. She leaves behind her four children, Carl (Darcy) Pulvermacher, Nancy (Keith) Maxwell, Sue (Allen) Pulvermacher-Alt, and Julie (Rob) Bauer—who will do their best to carry on her positive attitude. Her grandchildren, Kendra (Jason) Schluter, Tod, Beau, and Cody (Lori) Pulvermacher, Kyle (Jen), Nathan (Julie), and Kallan (KayDee) Maxwell, Justin and Maggie Alt, Lucas and Jillian Bauer, will fondly remember seeing grandma in purple; contributing to and checking out her snowman collection; and reaching into a cookie jar of homemade chocolate chip and oatmeal raisin cookies. While not related by bloodline she is also survived by members of the Swenson family who have been family-like farm neighbors for many generations. She is survived by 7 great-grandchildren: Andrew and Tyler Maxwell, Tessa and Macie Schluter, McKenzie and Logan Maxwell, and Connie Pulvermacher; her sister- and brother-in-law Mary Jane and Simon Dischler, with whom they celebrated one anothers’ anniversaries for 65 years; and many other family members and friends. Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, her in laws, and her siblings. As you read this Ruth is busily and happily catching up with those she loved who went to heaven before her.

Friends and family are invited to attend A Mass of Christian Burial for Ruth on Thursday, October 8, 2015 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Spring Green. Fr. Mike Resop will officiate with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 7, 2015, at St. John’s Catholic Church from 4:00 P.M.-7:00 P.M. and again on Thursday from 10:00 A.M. until the time of Mass at 11:00 A.M. The family is incredibly thankful to the caring staff at the Terrace Assisted Living facility and Greenway Manor nursing home. They helped mom preserve her sense of humor and dignity to the very end. Special thanks to Rosie Layton for her care over the years, along with Fr. Mike and Sister Lynne Marie. Memorials may be made to the Henry Vilas Zoo, and the Alzheimer’s Association.

The Richardson-Stafford Funeral Home in Spring Green is assisting the family with the arrangements.
